Casanti

The Casanti Mageocracy is situated on a small island surrounded by a deep lake. The mages of Casanti are curious, and friendly and are often seen as eccentric. They are willing to share their knowledge, but few non-Casanti mages have access to the Cities, Towers and libraries of Casanti. Casanti is ruled by a council of mages, one from each of the five towers (Obsidian, Amber, Emerald, Sapphire, Opal). Casanti mages are specialised not necessarily in a school of magic, but rather in terms of their role in contributing to the knowledge of the greater mageocracy. (Knowledge Obfuscation, Preservation, Discovery, Collection, Sharing).   All Citizens of Casanti attend one of the five schools of Knowledge and are ranked as follows: Acolyte, Mage, High Mage, Exarch. Different ranks come with different access levels and benefits within Casanti.

Structure

Leadership:

Council of Five: This council, composed of the five Exarchs (highest rank) – one from each tower specializing in a specific knowledge-related function - holds ultimate authority in Casanti. Each Exarch brings their expertise to guide the mageocracy's direction.

Citizen Tiers:

  • Acolytes: These are aspiring mages who attend one of the five schools of knowledge within the Towers. They learn the fundamentals of magic and contribute to basic tasks within their chosen field.
  • Mages: Having proven their competence, Acolytes graduate to Mages. They further specialize within their school and contribute actively to research, experimentation, or knowledge collection/preservation efforts. A citizen is considered a mage once they reach formal magic.
  • High Mages: Through exceptional contributions or breakthroughs, Mages can rise to High Mages. They lead research projects, mentor Acolytes and Mages, and potentially hold leadership positions within their Tower.
  • Exarchs: The pinnacle of Casanti society, Exarchs are the most respected and knowledgeable mages. They are chosen from the High Mages based on their lifetime dedication and exceptional contributions to their specific knowledge function (Obfuscation, Preservation, etc.) They also possess mastery in their chosen school of magic.

Benefits of Rank:

  • Higher ranks come with greater access to restricted knowledge within their Tower and potentially across other Towers (excluding the most tightly guarded secrets).
  • Increased responsibility and leadership opportunities within their chosen field.
  • Greater influence over the research and development of magical knowledge within Casanti.
Overall, Casanti operates as a meritocracy where advancement is based on contributions to the collective knowledge of the mageocracy. However, a layer of controlled access ensures the most sensitive knowledge remains protected.

Culture

Casanti culture thrives on intellectual curiosity. Citizens are friendly and a tad eccentric, but knowledge reigns supreme. Each Tower specializes in a knowledge function, from discovery to preservation. Collaboration is key, with even the wackiest Acolyte potentially contributing to a groundbreaking discovery. Their social hierarchy respects rank earned through magical contributions, but a shared love of learning binds them all. Life is a constant exploration of magic, with even leisure activities taking on an intellectual flavour. In Casanti, knowledge is power, and they're eager to learn, share, and protect it all.

Public Agenda

Knowledge Seekers: Casanti portrays itself as a haven for scholars and mages, dedicated to the pursuit and advancement of magical knowledge.   Benevolent Sharers: They emphasize a willingness to share their discoveries with the outside world, fostering a sense of intellectual collaboration.   Guardians of Magic: They position themselves as responsible custodians of powerful magical knowledge, ensuring its safekeeping and responsible use.

Agriculture & Industry

Casanti's island home forces them to be resourceful. Limited space necessitates magic-infused agriculture. Spells enhance growth, create miniature ecosystems, and prioritise high-yield, nutritious crops. Livestock is limited to smaller animals.   Industry in Casanti revolves around magic. Craftsmanship utilizes spells for creation, construction, and imbuing objects with magical properties. Production focuses on magical goods – wands, scrolls, potions, and magical tools. Their reliance on magic reduces the need for mundane items, which they could import in exchange for their magical expertise or creations.   Casanti's ingenuity allows them to thrive despite their limited space. Magic fuels both their agriculture and industry, ensuring efficient resource management and a focus on producing the tools and knowledge that fuel their scholarly pursuits. They often leverage their magical expertise for trade with the outside world.

The only good is knowledge, and the only evil is ignorance.
