Well Dipper
Well Dipper is the generic title used to refer to members of the Well Dippers organization. Members of the organization are of many specialties and backgrounds, but all focus on one common goal: the discovery and exploitation of lost water sources throughout Ashrain. While the organization employs many survivors of a scientific or geographical background to determine the location of potentially viable water sources beneath the ash blanket, the primary function of the individuals known as 'Well Dippers' is in hands on labor to puncture the ash blanket itself and expose the buried water sources. This job involves digging through the ash blanket and the charred earth beneath in search of potential water sources. It is grueling, incredibly taxing physical labor, involving digging by hand or by trowel in the hard packed ash and earth in extreme temperature and weather conditions and under constant threat of attack by illicit survivor groups such as the Carvers and the Birthers. Furthermore, exposing buried water sources involves a myriad of environmental hazards and dangers, from collapsed tunnels, to ash avalanches that can bury entire crews, to unexpected water discovery leading to drowning, and many more. Consequentely, well-dipping is considered the most dangerous profession in all of Ashrain, and those who undertake it do so in the full knowledge that their blood, sweat, and possibly even their life may be in sacrifice of a tomorrow they will never see. Well dippers are generally revered and respected by survivor communities, who rely on their work for the water that every survivor craves. They are also highly sought after by illicit organizations such as the Apollyon for locating and controlling new water sources.
