Summer Camp Prep 2024

A note from the author...

So I've been a little absent from the worldbuilding scene of late.   I've made no secret of the fact that, for the last 4 years, I've been battling some serious mental health issues. Anyone who has struggled or is struggling with their mental health will know that these kinds of issues can often leave you depleted of energy before the day has even begun. When achieving even necessary tasks feels like a constant uphill battle, there is little room for creative, happier things like worldbuilding or editing my novel.
For someone with low self-esteem, putting your creative work out there into the big, bad world can be a mixed experience. If you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a confidence boosting learning experience. If you're not in the right frame of mind, however, you can end up feeding that dreaded anxiety monster all of your will to engage in anything remotely creative. That is why I took the tough decision last year to take a break and give Summer Camp 2023 a wide berth because I was honest with myself and admitted that it could harm my ongoing recovery process.   Thankfully, this year is a different story. I feel I'm finally back and in a position to engage with the community, and be a part of something I'm passionate about again. Something which brings me joy and a sense of fulfilment which has felt alien to me at times. That being said, I will be taking Summer Camp slowly this year, setting realistic expectations, and prioritising self-care and compassion throughout the month of July, to avoid burnout and any negative impact on my mental health.   To give myself the best possible chance of achieving my goals, I have engaged with the Summer Camp Prep homework assignments the best I can, which will hopefully set me in good stead for July. I encourage every Summer Camper to do the same and wish you all the best of luck for a fantastic month of worldbuilding.

Week 1: Getting Organised

Assignment 1

"Consider what kind of changes would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points."
Looking back over Astaeria's History, change is perhaps one of the biggest, if not the biggest, theme of my world. Empire's have conquered and fallen, from the demise of Mathidon's 6000 year rule and the destruction of its successor, the Duchy of Tarryn, 1330 years later, to the rise of The Great Empire of Malvarron in 1331 A.E. and its ongoing colonialist seizure of independent city states. The people of the continent have lived through a tumultuous, bloody history of war and upheaval. As the Empire's borders have grown, there have been vast shifts in law, social attitudes and religious practice, all of which are open for exploration during this Summer Camp.
It is worth noting that I haven't yet collated my notes on the biggest revolution in Astaeria's recent history, the Vanguard Revolution, so this may well be the ideal opportunity to collate and develop that.   The biggest consequence of the Vanguard Revolution, the outlawing of magic has been touched on before, in The Common Man's Guide to Astaeria but never fully explored to its full potential.

From the Duchy which held the magi in high esteem, to the oppressive laws and attitudes of Malvarron, Elvaran society has seen the demise of the magi, from the acceptance and reverence of individuals with magical powers, to the stigmatisation and outright oppression of them in just over 75 years. But change is a comprehensive theme which goes beyond surface level historical events to encompass underlying attitudes of factions, organisations and the general populace.   Not all citizens in the Empire echo the Empire's controversial views. Beneath the surface of acceptable social attitudes, there is an undercurrent of resistance bubbling, especially in the conquered city states of the continent. The organised and elusive resistance group, the Wardens of Ethera are rumoured to be going from strength to strength in their mission to put the heir of Duke Tarryn on the throne, and so far they have managed to stay hidden, outwitting the empire's loyalists.   Political disillusionment and the desire for lasting change is just as important as change itself. Instances of resistance, both big and small, and the Empire's efforts to curtail change and maintain their power are all themes which could be explored through the summer camp prompts.

Assignment 2

"Based on this, decide how many prompts you'll go for during Summer Camp. Then, download the pledge document and fill it accordingly!"
I'm being gentle with myself and setting my expectations low this year. In 2021 and 2022 I achieved a copper badge and I'm intending to do the same this year. Eight prompts during the month of July should be realistically achievable, especially as I'm putting effort into preparation.   Despite my realism, I'm not going to limit myself if the going is good. A copper badge is the minimum I would be happy with achieving, but if inspiration strikes I will take advantage of it and keep going, just for the love of worldbuilding. It would be fantastic if I could make it to silver or even gold but every article I can produce is an achievement in itself.   By removing the pressure, I'm hoping I can smash my eight prompt target and recapture that worldbuilding bug.

Assignment 3

"Get your categories and tags organized!"

Phew! I think I've got this one in the bag. Thankfully, I pride myself on my organisational skills, however, it's been some time since I've evaluated my World Anvil catalogue and some areas aren't as user friendly as I would like.   Therefore, I've spent a little time tidying up my categories so that they flow more logically. I have removed all clutter, such as duplicate and irrelevant stubs, and updated my To Do List, adding ideas for articles that are required to fill in some sizeable gaps in the lore.   I'm also trialling a new tagging system, following key themes and , which should make it easier to navigate my world as it grows. This includes a hashtag for stubs, so I can easily access work yet to be completed or published. Despite trying to keep tags to a minimum, there is a long list of necessary tags, which I have noted in a private codex entry for my own future reference.   *Find some tips on organising your own worlds here

Assignment 4

"Take a look at your meta, primer, and any other high-level document and update it according to the current state of your world."
It has been a long, long time since I even glanced in the direction of my world, Meta, and from the outset it's apparant that the state of play has changed massively.   My original aim for Astaeria was to create a TTRPG setting that I could use for a DnD campaign.   Since I got bitten by the worldbuilding bug, however, my imagination has been running overtime and I've been inflicted with a love of creative writing more generally. I have completed my first draft of a Dark Fantasy novel, The Wardens of Ethera, and I've been squirrelled away for the last year-or-so trying to develop utter chaos into a work I can be proud of. I now have an aim of making that novel the first of a trilogy.   But I haven't forgotten my passion for TTRPG either. I see no reason why a novel and a TTRPG campaign, or two, cannot co-exist in the same universe. It has been done before, of course, and I would just love to be able to intertwine my two creative passions into one brainchild. I try to keep this in mind when I'm creating anything to do with Astaeria.   My worldbuilding must be focussed primarily on the lore explored in my novel, whilst building enough relevant side content to support any future TTRPG campaigns set in Astaeria. Wardens, is a twisted blend of Dark and Grimdark Fantasy with blended elements of science fantasy. Any future worldbuilding relating to TTRPG should reflect this as well.

With all this in mind, I have spent some time refining and expanding my Meta section with plenty of plot secrets about my world, its themes, scopes, and drama points. But there are too many spoilers to go into detail right now. Sorry beans...

Week 2; Refuge

Assignment 1

"Consider what kinds of refuge would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points."
Elvara is riddled with conflict; its luscious green landscape marred by the blood of those who have dared to make a stand against the Malvarri.   In the occupied towns and cities of Elvara, the Empire's forces oppress the masses through the fear of violence, imprisonment and death, and for many, the feeling of safety and comfort is difficult to find.
That being said, there is plenty of scope for refuges in my world. I have only utilised one idea to date, The Cave of Lothnune, which coincidently was written for Summer Camp 2021.   In a dark world, refuges have to be special places to be able to provide comfort, however I want them to reflect chaotic and sorrowful nature of Elvaran history.   Refuges can keep you safe, yet feelings towards them can still be complicated.
I could write about anything from taverns and historical strongholds to orphanages in war-torn areas and underground hideaways for resourceful Magi.   Even Elvara itself, though perhaps difficult to reconcile, is a haven for Erroloni refugees fleeing a bloody civil war in their own kingdom.   As Refuges also link to the first theme of change, I'm sure I'll have more sparks of inspiration after working on the first set of Summer Camp prompts.

Assignment 2

"Find a community—whether that’s our Discord server, Facebook Group, your RPG or friend group, or something else."

If I'm being honest, I've been far from good at maintaining my online social presence for some time. However, when I complete my Summer Camp prep, I will update my followers on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram! regarding my participation in Summer Camp.   I also vow to dedicate some time every day to provide updates of my progress and engaging with the work of other Summer Campers, worldbuilders, and writers.   I also have a Discord server called the Writers' Guild, which I will keep updated. Everyone is welcome to join by clicking here.   (It even has its own World Anvil Challenge thread!)

Assignment 3

"Find ways to improve styling and layout in your world!"

Admittedly, I don't have the time to implement the design ideas I've envisaged for my world this close to the launch of Summer Camp.   It requires me to put some time into learning CSS, which I've been putting off for quite a while due to me feeling entirely clueless. It's a good job I have a partner that can provide in house tech support! I just need to bribe him with cookies...

Week 3: Belief

Assignment 1

"Consider what kind of beliefs would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points."
Religion and belief in our own world has shaped, and continues to shape, so many of our virtues, daily habits and social institutions despite attrition. There's no denying it is an important aspect of worldbuilding that needs to be addressed, in vast detail, for a successful worldbuilding project.   Given the importance of deities in many TTRPGS, belief was one of the first themes I considered when I started building Astaeria. In fact, one of the first things I actually wrote formally was an Elvaran creation myth the Champions of Ethera for Worldember 2020. From that, I determined the twelve gods of the Pantheon of Ethera which have been widely worshipped throughout Elvara since the fall of Mathidon.
However, I have yet to explore in any great detail how religious belief has manifested and shaped the traditions of the Elvaran people. This is something I would love to explore this Summer Camp, as there are many practical questions that I have yet to provide any serious answers to, like the practical forms worship takes or the types of festivals and religious holidays which are celebrated.   Thinking again about the first theme of change, religious practice has certainly changed with the advent of the Empire. Unfavourable attitudes towards magical practice, worship of the Guardian of Magic, Mathonir, has been outlawed in the capital, and Gods such as Morrigantis, the Goddess of War, have taken the Goddess Elvara's place as the most revered of the Elvaran gods.
The deities of the lesser revered Shadow Pantheon are also open for development. As commonly held attitudes have evolved and morality decayed, many people in the Empire have turned to the more unscrupulous characters of Elvaran legend.   If I wanted to, I could even branch out and explore the gods and pantheons of the other four kingdoms that make up Astaeria. However, this seems like a distraction from my worldbuilding focus. I have tried to stick to the methodology of agile worldbuilding during this project, sticking to Elvaran society and only reaching further afield when World Anvil's challenges have demanded it. I would like to continue with this focus, as I feel it is more beneficial to my overall aims for the project.

Assignment 2

"Create a bank of inspirations! Quotes, music, description of experiences and shower thoughts, etc."
This is something I already use, and I use it often!   I have a folder of memos on my phone, specifically for this purpose, which, when the opportunity arises, I transfer to my Plottr if it concerns the plot or characters of my novel or transfer to an article on World Anvil for future worldbuilding development.

Assignment 3

"Find art and pictures that inspire you, and grab a map if you don't have one (and need one)."
Map   The map for Astaeria was the very first thing I created when I started my worldbuilding project. However, I've recently noticed that I was missing a label or two so I have updated my map on here accordingly and thankfully without losing all my pins.   I've also made a note on my To Do list that I need to update my map pins with any new articles which relate to a location.
Astaeria 1405 AE
Astaeria Post-Vanguard Revolution
Images   I have created a four new folders on my desktop for each Summercamp theme and spent some time surfing my favourite stock image site, Pixabay.   Below are some thematic ones I feel particularly drawn to...

Assignment 4

"Check your inspirations again. Are they still relevant? Can you find any that better represent the current state of your project?"

I did this when I updated my Meta for the assignments in week one, so all are relevant and current.

Week 4: Decay

Assignment 1

"Consider what kind of decay would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points."

Physical decay is an important symbolic theme of my world. War has deeply affected the continent over Elvara's history, creating destruction synonymous with a crumbling society. There are many ruins dating from the ancient monoliths that scholars believe were dedicated to the the Guardians to the more recent destruction caused by the Second Great Elvaran War.   I already have some notes dedicated to the Ruins of D'aethron—the City Republic of Magi which was destroyed by the Empire in 1382 A.E—which I could formalise into published lore as it is an important location in my trilogy.
But, I think physical decay is only the material manifestation of the moral decline of the Empire. Emperor Lucianno is a tyrannical and bloodthirsty ruler who will do anything to maintain his power and the strength of the empire. His loyalists also embody oppression, particularly in the occupied towns and cities where empire sanctioned violence is an all too common occurrence.   Any acts of resistance, no matter how small, are considered treason, for which the punishment is death and in the capital, the newly built Augustine arena entertains the masses with a variety of gladiatorial munera (shows) and blood sports, using violence to honour the Malvarro family.   There is a lot of scope for developing this theme, and I have a lot to think about. I'm hoping that the prompts will provide some much need clarity.

Assignment 2

"If you like special tea when you write, stock up for a month. Tidy your office, make a “do not disturb” sign, and think about any other last-minute strategies to optimize your writing space and time!"

Coffee is an absolute must. Tea if it's after 4pm and I must remember to buy in a whole crate of Pepsi Max—yes Pepsi is better than Coke, and yes that is a hill I am willing to die on! (Other carbonated beverages are available...)   I also have my writing playlist on Spotify, and if music is too distracting, I have my Loop Earplugs to block out background noise and improve my focus.

Assignment 3

"Review your world homepage to hook potential readers!"
There's not a lot of time for me to do anything radical, but I have updated my carousel folder with fresher, more enticing images and have removed some of the older ones.   I've also had a chat with my other half about improving my CSS design, and we have some ideas for that. However, any design changes won't be implemented now until after Summer Camp

Assignment 4

"Take a look at your author profile and pillar articles on your world and polish them!"
I have filled in the favourites and interests section and updated my profile picture.

We made it!

That concludes my prep for World Anvil Summer Camp 2024—just in the nick of time, as usual!   I wish all participants the best of luck, and I can't wait to read some of the quality work that this community never fails to produce!
