Dejad

Dejad is the northernmost khanate, located on the border of Dhulwin. It encapsulates the majority of the Rising Mountains and controls a mountain passage to Dhulwin.   The ruler of Dejad is Khan Altai.

Geography

Dejad controls most of the Rising Mountains, though a small offshoot range going northward belongs to Dhulwin. The Rising Mountains themselves tend to be more arid, especially to the west underneath Dhulwin’s desert, but they are not quite desert themselves.   There is one main mountain pass to Dhulwin on the eastern side of the mountain range. It is the safest to travel and is a popular trading pass to get goods from the south up to Dhulwin’s starstone for export. This is where Toboltrium, the capital of Dejad, lies. Khan Altai resides in this massive valley city.

Culture

Dejad culture is heavily influenced by the Dejad tribal culture, but not everybody in the region considers themselves Dejad tribesmen. The tribe was originally made up of humans, gnomes, halflings, wood elves, goliaths, and bugbears who had adapted to the sunny arid life in the mountains, but now anybody can be found in the Dejad khanate.   Traditional Dejad culture puts a large emphasis on storytelling through text. Since the environment doesn’t get much humidity up there, it is perfect for preserving texts written on parchment or papyrus. Many ancient and well-preserved texts have been found in caves across the Rising Mountain range and many Dejad folks turn out to be scribes or scholars of written language. Scribe has traditionally been one of the occupations held in highest esteem in traditional Dejad culture.   The Dejad are also used to living in a harsh, unforgiving climate. They have adopted a culture of welcoming hospitality mirroring that of the Auxilium, accepting in strangers who need help, helping people who are injured or sickly, and inviting scavengers and vagabonds in who have fallen on hard times. The Dejad have recently come into conflict with the Warkan government concerning this trait - the Warkan government does not accept criminal Revolutionist refugees from Dhulwin, but many Dejad ignore these rules and house them anyways.   Dejad architecture is mostly built out of clay, sandstone, and plaster, incorporating many columns, post-lintel structures, and entablatures, similar to ancient Rome. Many frescoes are painted along these plaster walls, well preserved because of the arid environment, creating a lively and decorated atmosphere.

Economy

The economy of the Dejad khanate relies on trade up through the mountains to Dhulwin, since it is the safest and most commonly-traveled path.   Aside from this, Dejad also produces a large amount of artisan goods, particularly focused on blacksmithing - lots of weapons, armor sets, machinery parts, hooks, bows, and other implements are forged and enchanted here and sold across the Brights and Gloom.
