Sol

✹ • • •. • ). ⦿.... ⦿....... ⦾..... ⦾.. ).... ⦾.. )

The Sol system (alternatively called the solar system) is the home star system of the human species, hosting their homeworld Earth amid its contingent of planets. At its center is the G2V-type yellow dwarf star Sol, the only star in the system.

Astrography

Location

The Sol system is essentially at the heart of known space. Its closest system is Proxima Centauri, and by extension Alpha Centauri, at just 4.24 lightyears distant. However, Sol has jump links to ten other systems: Helios, Luhman 16, Chaos, Wolf 359, Muse, Sirius, Gliese 65, Ross 154, Ran, and Anemos - the latter two by way of rogue planet stopovers.

Structure

Sol is a solitary star with a broad assortment of planets. Outward from the star: the first four planets (including Earth) are telluric, and are separated from the four outer gas and ice giants by a silicate debris belt. One of these giant worlds, Jupiter, is so massive that it forces Sol itself into a slightly binary orbit. Beyond the outer four giants lies a disk of scattered icy planetoids called the Kuiper Belt, as well as an extensive cometary shell called the Oort Cloud in its furthest reaches. This cloud hides the last major planet of the system: Terminus, an ice giant in exile.

Ecology

The Sol system hosts a widely varied and highly successful genesis group: the terragenids. While the group originated on Earth, a catastrophic planetary impact event in the Carboniferous period caused a panspermia event that transported microscopic terragenid life to Europa. Additionally, Saturn's moon Titan potentially hosts an extremely primitive biosphere of complex hydrocarbon chemistry.

Asteropolitics

United Sol System
Organization | Jul 6, 2024
The Sol system is organized under the United Sol System, a pan-governmental organization evolved from the original United Nations. The USS assembly, seated in Gaia Station over Earth, is convened to address issues that affect internal interplanetary relations and/or the Sol system at large. It is one of the most populous and most powerful asteropolitical entities in the UNH.

Reality Check

The real solar system has 8 major planets according to the current IAU definition of "planet," and 5 confirmed dwarf planets. Earth is the only one of these known to harbor life at the present moment.
