Korribon

Korribon is the northernmost city in the Hadrianic Empire. Originally home to the Djarin tribe of barbarians, the Djarin were broken during a prolonged siege and their king captured by the empire during a failed assault to re-take the capital. The commander of the Northern Legions, Tiberius Hadrianus, recognized the strategic importance of the location and established a large, permanent garrison that his legion could use to pacify the northern barbarian tribes.   As the legions successfully pacified the region through military action and trade, what started as a remote outpost quickly bloomed into the second largest city in the empire. The presence of the garrison ensures that imperial gold constantly flows to the city, and the exotic goods from friendly barbarian tribes fetch a high price from collectors in Hadrianus. As more tribes have sworn allegiance to the empire, Tiberius has allowed barbarians to join the ranks of his legions and has been granting citizenship to those who successfully complete their service, or to their families if they die in the line of duty. As a result, Korribon is the most diverse city on the continent, where barbarians from dozens of tribes mingle freely with the citizens of the empire, all under the dutiful watch of the imperial legions.   The most prominent feature of the city are its walls. Rumored to impenetrable, the wall was originally built to protect the garrison at the north end of the city, but has recently been extended to protect the entire settlement. A cathedral dedicated to Krom dominates the center of the city, famous for its gothic spires covered in golden barbs. These barbs represent the Tree of Woe, and serve both to glorify Krom and warn enemies of Krom's terrible wrath. Markets have sprung up around the cathedral, where goods from the capital, locally crafted goods, and exotic wares from the surrounding barbarian tribes can all be found.   The other prominent feature of the city is the Red Row, named after the color of the legionnaire's armor. This collection of bars, taverns, brothels, casinos, and gladiator pits has been separating soldiers from their pay since the founding of the garrison. The legatus turns a blind eye, as he knows indulging a bit of vice is good for morale.   Outside the walls of the city are training grounds used by the legions to practice their maneuvers and siege tactics. There's also a large detention camp used for holding barbarian prisoners undergoing "pacification."
