Primordial

Primordial is the language of primordials and elementals. The Giant language is a debased form of it, and the Abyssal language is a form of Primordial warped and twisted by the evil of the Abyss. It is a broader language family as well, encompassing the elemental dialects of Aquan, Auran, Ignan, and Terran. Fluency in Primordial allows a creature to understand all dialects, although each dialect is sufficiently similar that creatures who have a strong understanding of one may be able to understand portions of another.

Primordial Dialects

Aquan

Aquan is the language of the Elemental Plane of Water. It is a flowing language full of subtleties of meaning. Aquatic elves, hadozee, merfolk, tritons, tortles, water genasi, and locathah all speak Aquan.

Auran

Auran is the language of the Elemental Plane of Air. It is a breathy, relaxed language that has been described as a slow exhaling of air. In addition to creatures native to the Plane of Air, Auran is sometimes spoken by air genasi, aarakocra, and smoke drakes. Many kenku can understand Auran, but can only produce speech through mimicry.

Ignan

Ignan is the language of the Elemental Plane of Fire. It is a language full of sharp clicks and hisses. Many fire genasi speak this language, in addition to the efreet.

Terran

Terran is the language of the Elemental Plane of Earth. It is a rumbling language with deep tones that reverberate through the listener. In addition to earth elemental creatures, earth genasi often learn the language.

Writing System

The archaic language of the Primordials was merely a spoken one. The dwarves were the earliest race to transcribe it, and therefore, Primordial and many of its subsequent languages use Dethek as their script.
