Avalor is a world with a vast variety of languages and dialects, many of which are associated with specific specific races or ethnicities. Common, alongside its dialects, is the most widely spoken and serves as the general trade language for most peoples, while Elvish and Dwarvish rank second and third. Languages such as Celestial or Draconic are practiced by scholars, arcane practitioners, or clergymen, while languages such as Infernal or Primordial can be exceedingly rare on the material plane. Your race indicates the languages your character can speak by default, and your background might give you access to one or more additional languages of your choice. If you feel your character would lack fluency in their race's specified language, or you want to utilize a homebrewed dialect that fits your character, consult your DM. Languages are split between standard and exotic. Standard languages are those of creatures frequent on the material plane and include Common, Draconic, Dwarvish, Elvish, Giant, Gnomish, Goblin, Halfling, and Orc. Exotic languages are rarer and oftentimes more difficult to learn, including Abyssal, Celestial, Deep Speech, Gith, Gnoll, Infernal, Primordial, and Undercommon. Languages such as Druidic and Thieves' cant can only be obtained through taking a level in a specific class. A player can choose to learn a language during downtime if they are willing to expend the time and resources. Read the "Learning a Language" section of the Homebrew Campaign Rules for more details.
