Constolba

Constolba is a city with a rich history. Situated on the southern banks of the Strait of Dormuz, it is set up in the perfect location to influence all seabound trade between the east & west and most overland trade between Alvana and Kinavi. Recognized for its importance, the neighboring Hindaros founded the city to give it a slice of trade. It then became the capital city of the kingdom of Constol for 221 years, until in 407 that government collapsed and was replaced by the Jasani, after which Constolba became its capital. Constolba, far from just a trading city, is also a vital population center and boasts thriving military industry.

Demographics

Constolba is a very wealthy city, but much of that wealth is supported by a large lower class that works in the factories, dockyards, and other basic jobs that have little to no pay. They consist of about 45% of the population. The middle class is much larger than in many other cities, even other cities in the Jasani empire, due to its trading ties and lax business laws. About 30% is this, consisting of farmers, traders, managers, doctors, and other professions. Another 18% is Upper Class. However, 7% of the city consists of a unique class known as the "Military Aristocracy". While soldiers are lauded as heroes in nearly every society, in Jasani current warriors and particularly long-time soldiers recieve numerous benefits and high pay (military is most of Jasani's budget). High-ranking officers have a lot of government power and the elite Jassars are treated like royalty. Joining the armed forces and passing basic training is basically a ticket to fortune.   As it relates to Avani races Constolba is mostly Sparalus and Hirundine, though there are often Apodines from the far east and there are numerous travelers from other nations. As fellow enemies of the Treaty of Passaran, this is one of the only places where a Cyanni may feel welcome outside their home country.

Defences

Constolba, as such a large city with so many key industries, has always required strong defenses against Avani and monsters. It was a key strategic location during the Cyanni War, and had to face equal military challenges during the Jasani revolution and the Jasani conflicts. To endure these challenges Constolba employs a mixture of innovative static and mobile defense patterns. For one, it possesses 3 layers of thick stone walls (reinforced with magic) that are concentric around the city and about 30 spans (7.5 feet) high. This obviously does close to nothing to impede Avani, who can fly, but makes it nearly impenetrable to monsters. One layer circles the outside of the city, with the other two layers having progressively smaller radii focused on the Imperial Palace, and lines of walls span between the layers. This compartmentalizes the city into sections: if part of a wall is broken down, they can contain the damage by cordoning off that area.   The walls are protected by full battlements and round fortified towers every 400 spans (100 ft). Communication in the thick of battle is accomplished by wooden ensign-bearer towers on some sections of the wall. These allow for flag signals across the city. Other than these truly impressive defensive structures, Constolba is protected by the bulk of the Jasani navy and a sizable force of infantry.

Industry & Trade

With its strategic location Constolba exerts a significant influence over global trade. Ships that want to get between the West and East have no choice but to pass through the Strait of Dormuz, paying tariffs at either Dormuz or Constolba. It is also a good place for caravans to load up on ferries and cross between the south or the north, which generates additional income for the economy. The easy access to these valuable trade routes also means it boasts a lively marketplace.   However, Constolba's economy is not stilted on this trade. They also have a significant sector for mining and refining ores into durable goods. It sits on top of large iron and coal caches, sits next to a forest full of good lumber, and has the manpower to use this. They also have access to a lot of Seafire, which they sell to other nations that pledge not to use it against them. The military-industrial complex also employs many workers to smelt ore into swords, polearms, shields, and armor. Shipyards in the city use the availible wood to construct new boats for the empire's navy, such as the Jasani Sakurti Diver, as well as the weapons that go on those ships. Assembly lines construct the delicate pieces that eventually go into the nation's secretive Firebolts. Constolba can rightly be called one of the most productive cities on Avanima, even to the point of industrialization (which is significant given the medieval tech level of most of the world).
