Free Space

Free Space is an area of the galaxy that no existing empire is allowed to spread into or further colonize as enshrined in law by the Alphega Accords. The purpose of this was both to help the civilizations located within to not be overtaken and subsumed by another empire and to prevent conflicts over the many valuable resources and raw materials located there. Instead, an agreement has been reached that outlines how nations are allowed to send mining and harvesting expeditions out into Free Space to freely collect resources and return without conflict, but many pirates and privateers have taken to roaming the expanse in search of these parties to make their fortune. Because of this, the expeditions are often heavily escorted.
