House Lethe

The Lethe family was a prominent House pre-Reckoning descended from the Apostle Baon and a Nvaonese man.

History

Convinced to walk amongst the mortals in disguise by Avantuen, Baon found herself falling in love and starting a family with one.   After the death of her beloved, Baon returned to the sky to resume her duties as Aypavoc's moon and grieve in solitude. Tales of her divinity would be passed down through the generations and become distorted over time.   Due to being direct descendants of an Apostle, members of the Lethe family could use magic, particularly specializing in hemomancy. This gift, unique amongst the Nvaonese, earned the House great influence and power within the aristocracy in exchange for their feats in combat.

Unique Traits

Due to many of the Lethes having an obsession with their divine bloodline, inbreeding was common and resulted in the family exhibiting poor constitution and frequently experiencing miscarriages or birth defects.   Much like the Apostles (and later the Divine Beasts), Lethes were effectively immortal and difficult to kill through normal means. The most tried and true method was incineration. Though they tired quickly and generally had poor stamina, normal wounds would not suffice to kill them; only a creature of equally divine nature or wielding part of one could slay them, though by all means people tried alternate methods (see Hiomak).       The Lethes closely guarded the secrets of magic being passed through the blood, and thus consumed their victims largely in secret, though plenty of rumors were spread about them. However, they were unique in their ability to absorb the power of even mere Ildsif if consumed, something that normal humans could not do without growing ill from the imbibement of vast quantities of blood, though the effects were temporary. Due to their genetic quirk of being able to process and retain the divinity in creatures much more efficiently, the Lethes were able to cast without the use of crucibles and components, like the War-Scholars would later come to use.   However, unlike other divine bloodlines, a Lethe's power was not absorbed by consuming them, perhaps a byproduct of their profane genes; instead, the creature consuming the blood would be thralled, unable to resist commands originating from the Lethe.   Due to the high concentration of divine blood and magical capabilities, it could be argued that the Lethes were Ildsif. However, they remained in the Deeprealm and allied themselves with the Nvaonese, and most Lethes in fact looked down on the Ildsif for their animalistic traits.
