Metus

Metus, also known as the Claws of Terror and Bandit King, is a major supporting character in Reckoning and one of the Six Divine Beasts in Wraiths and Deicide.

Appearance

Before the Reckoning, Metus was a half-Ildsif, half-Nvaonese bandit. He lived on the outskirts of society, preying on the weak with his band of followers. Due to a lack of food and shelter growing up, he was quite runty in size, with more than enough bite to make up for it. He had tufted lavender hair and diminutive animal ears, his Ildsif facial patterns difficult to discern. His clothing was unusual for the time, and he wielded a dark steel claymore as his weapon of choice.   After the Reckoning, Metus bears the form of a sleek white stoat with five pairs of limbs, diminutive in size yet terror-inspiring in presence.

Personality

Pre-Reckoning
As a hybrid, there was no place in society that would truly accept Metus; he embraced this individuality with a passion lent by spite, adopting many theatrical mannerisms and quirks. His lack of a home lend to a mercurial temperament and an unhealthily provocative nature.   To survive, he had to be dishonest and cutthroat. Although he would have been kinder given the acceptance of others and the opportunity to do so, he rarely experienced any kindness in his life. As such, he chased after wealth as a means of power and being adored, and was highly skeptical of anyone who claimed to live idealistically or perform selfless acts.   Post-Reckoning
After the goddess cursed them with Confliction, he was perhaps the slowest to be affected; he had always believed in strength above all else, after all. However, the long years caused corruption to become unavoidable, and he slowly became more paranoid and manipulative, preferring to puppeteer society from the shadows rather than engage in his old theatrics.

Role

Post-Reckoning
  • Metus maintains the Northern portion of the barrier around Aypavoc. His domain is Yuanlin, and he cannot leave the capitol of Anhua.
  • Metus's season is the fifth of the year, a dusky twilight filled with skittering shadows. Creatures born in his season have violet eyes.
  • His divine domains are bravery, safety, hands, claws, ice, darkness, secrets, survival, lagomorpha and rodentia.
  • His conflicts are fear and peril.

History

Pre-Reckoning
There are very few courses a half-Ildsif can take in life, especially in an era fraught with war between the two races. Unwanted from conception and abandoned by the time he could stand, Metus clung stubbornly to life, doing whatever it took to survive. Ultimately, this led to a life of thievery and banditry.   Metus hardly concerned himself with picking a side in the war, and attracted other like-minded individuals who found themselves uprooted during the conflict, amassing a sizable band during his rise to power and a hefty chunk of territory in both the Skyrealm and Deeprealm. He acted as he saw fit, which was usually to his own benefit, though there were times where he let his whims guide his actions as an exercise of power.   This fascination with testing himself brought him to face the Apostles with the others. Although he never quite saw himself as a hero or any nonsense like that, he found it entertaining to play the part, and grew quite fond of the foolishly kind people he traveled with.   Post-Reckoning
Afterwards, the remaining Divine Beasts erected the barrier around Aypavoc, attempting to help the survivors of the cataclysm recover while they masked the history of magic and the suffering of the world. Metus was not as reclusive as the others, continuing to play his role from the shadows and giving rise to an impressive mercantilist kingdom.
