Varys

Varys, also known as the Wings of Desire and the Flockmother, is a major supporting character in Reckoning and one of the Six Divine Beasts in Wraiths and Deicide.

Appearance

Before the Reckoning, Varys was a Nvaonese palace attendant. She was quite petite and had long, looping blonde hair tied with light blue ribbons, as well as a beauty mark under one of her striking sapphire eyes. As such, she was considered quite conventionally attractive despite her common birth.   After the Reckoning, Varys takes the form of a bird with the grandiose tail feathers of a quetzal and four radial sapphire wings. Her magical domains grant her the ability to magically change her shape, unlike the other Divine Beasts, though she will never quite look human.

Personality

Pre-Reckoning
Born as a servant in the same year as Fastid, the two of them served Irev together until his achievements as a War-Scholar allowed him the leverage to elevate her to the status of a palace attendant. Highly conscious of her common birth and the stigmas it bore within the confines of the castle, Varys stifled much of her personality to appear meek and timid, trying her best not to harm Fastid or Irev's reputations.   Her secret wish was to live as she pleased, bold and crass and skilled with a blade, but her desire to make their life easier caused her to ignore this.   Glimmers of her personality and independent nature were quite appealing to Ammon, who was taken with her since childhood; however, his true desires were to tame and subjugate her, not nurture her.   Post-Reckoning
After Ammayn's curse twisted her form and corrupted her spirit, she became mad, surrendering completely to her vices after a lifetime of exhaustive self-control.

Role

Post-Reckoning
  • Varys maintains the Eastern portion of the barrier around Aypavoc. Her domain is Atonement, and she cannot leave the confines of the ruins of Setya.
  • Varys's season is the fourth of the year, with clear blue skies and harsh sweeping winds. Creatures born in her season have blue eyes.
  • Her divine domains are freedom, charity, sky, wind, wings, wealth, fortune, nobility, and aves.
  • Her conflicts are greed and prejudice.

History

Pre-Reckoning
Varys was born to a pair of servants in the castle, a few months younger than Fastid. The nobles were cruel to them, often beating them for acting out of line.   She was highly conscious of their elevated status following Fastid's ascension as a war-scholar, and stifled various parts of her personality in an attempt to protect their reputation.   Her forced engagement to the prince of Nvaon caused her to grow increasingly detached and helpless. However, she did her best to appease him in hopes of making Fastid's life easier. Upon his defection, she embraced the opportunity to embrace her true self, stealing royal funds in order to enlist Metus's aid and help her brother on his quest.   Post-Reckoning
Afterwards, the remaining Divine Beasts erected the barrier around Aypavoc, attempting to help the survivors of the cataclysm recover while they masked the history of magic and the suffering of the world. The grief of losing her people immediately drove her to madness and corruption; she created the varayi from the sundered spirits of Nvaon, deluded into thinking they were perfect copies of the fallen.   Her ability to change forms led her to occasionally seduce mortals, most notably Aavarq of the Ir tribe, with whom she bore twins: Daiys and Taiys.
