Those Jerks
The New Melentine Empire, also known as the Third Empire, has a foundation different then most modern nations.
Its original founders were not survivors of the Battle of Refuge, rather they were transmogrified into bronze statues by the Supreme Patriarch Balthasar Gelt before the Sundering of the world. Before he died, he reverted them back to their previous form, saving a third of the Melentine Empire's original population.
Currency
The empire produces a vast amount of coins to finance their endeavors, the copper coin being the Common, the silver coin the Merchant, the gold coin the Royal. They are one of the few nations to produce new electrum and platinum coins, the electrum coin being the noble, and the platinum coin being the Imperial.
Culture
The Melentine are considered clever and industrious, as well as educated and well-spoken. Placing faith in hard work, education, and discipline, they are known for their rule of law and government. Melentines also make for shrewd diplomats and warriors. In general, Melentines prefer force over most other things, but are willing to use diplomacy if necessary. The Melentine accept freedom of religion alongside different cultures, and their Empire is held together by a strong Emperor, the bureacracy, the rule of law, and the Legions. Throughout the social classes where Melentine culture has flourished, education and wealth is broadly distributed, allowing many citizens to become literate. Melentine culture also enables free trade within the lands of the Empire. Slavery is commonplace within Imperial lands, and is one of the main centers of the slave trade on Tremalking. Due to the size and history of the Empire, Melentine culture has become a combination of various cultures of their subjects. As such, any of any race can advance in wealth and status in commerce, the bureaucracy, and the military. Taxes are handled by the Census and Excise, and are based on the head count of the taxed region. The Census and Excise also deals with licenses, such as imports and mercenary company incorporation. Melentine buildings are often of timbered, half-timbered, or stone construction, with peaked roofs, low slopes and flat planes, and elaborate, decorated exteriors.
Within Melentine culture, blood vampires are considered monsters to be hunted and destroyed. Despite this, however, notions of noble and virtuous vampires exist in Melentine tradition, and are believed to also take part in the Magnus Guild and Melentine aristocracy.
Public Agenda
The New Melentine Empire seeks to expand their territories to one day include all the lands of the Old Melentine Empire. This includes the countries of The Aurumfels, Principality of Burundy, and the various city-states of The Western Dales.
Some suspect that the empire wont stop until they cover all the lands formerly claimed by their distant forebears, Tremalking Empire.
Assets
the current territory of the New Melentine Empire include the West Bident Badlands, the Sendarian Lowlands, the Plaibs of Tropicea, the former Fifth Age nations of Punecea, Sarclay, Baccas, Cyracus, Dubli, Kyre, and Fillapa, as well as the northern portions of the Aurush Forests.
History
ever since the beginning of The Fifth Age Age, the Third Empire has undergone heavy changes, both culturally and politically. The death of Balthasar Gelt and the end of the The Second Apocalypse marked the end of the Dominus Dynasty, only to be led by the Titus Dynasty. The Senate continued to rule for fifteen years before a civil war erupted. It ended when Warlord Auron Titus I conquered the new Imperial City of Kastinople and took over what was left of the Empire.
When Auron Titus I took the throne, the Empire was nothing like what it used to be. The central provinces were already settled by The Aurumfels, and the old heartland was largely destroyed, with only the most northern portion being ruled by the empire and the south being taken over by the now-independent Burundians.
The Titus dynasty, seeing the decayed state of their once great empire, began a massive reconstitution of their economy, military, and social programs. Thus was the New Melentine Empire reborn, and over the course of the next hundred years, systematically waged regional wars, slowly reconquered old territories, continuously expanding their military capabilities.
Military
The New Melentine Legions are standing professional armies of mainly volunteers serving standard 20-year terms (plus five years as reservists), although many in the service of the New Melentine Empire serve as many as 30 to 40 years on active duty, as established by the Titus Emperors. Regular conscription of citizens is only decreed in emergencies.
Currently, there are 28 legions, consisting of fourth fifths heavy infantry and a fifth of heavy cavalry, with about 5,000 men each (total 125,000). Legions are flanked by the auxilia, a corps of regular troops recruited mainly from imperial subjects who did not hold Melentine citizenship. Auxiliaries, who served a minimum term of 25 years, are also mainly volunteers. The auxilia consists of about 250 regiments of roughly cohort size, that is, about 500 men (in total 125,000 men, or 50% of the total army). Auxilia contain light infantry, light cavalry, archers and slingers.
Though the Empire possesses a sizable wet navy called the Navidus, they have a considerably stronger air armada called the Aereclass, due to the bottle necks of the Melentine Ocean and the Gap. A large air Navy allows them to expand beyond the confines of their limited waters.
Spell casters from the Magnus Guild are commonly attached to legions, along with detachments of warhounds used for scouting and general warfare.
Their most distinguished legion is the Seventh Legion.
