Principality of Burundy

Current Month: Julwar 2nd: 209, The Fifth Age
A middling nation on the southern end of the continent, Burundy initially found itself at odds with the New Melentine Empire, being located on what was once Melentine lands.   They came to an arrangement, and is now considered a proxy nation in service to New Melentine, bound by oath to answer the call should their nation be needed.

History

The Burundians are descended from the small number of Second Fall survivors of the Balwyr Kingdom. Being unable to defend themselves should a rival nation choose to attack, they chose to settle as far away from the other surviving groups as possible. They chose the lands just north of the western Soutlands; what was once the southern borders of the old Melentine Empire.   After a brief failed stint at empire-building, occupying the Vladian city of Tragovist during a purge of The Dead Lands, they opted to reinforce their own lands for any future invaders.   Instead what came was an offer; in 183 Fifth Age, the New Melentine Empire sent emissaries to the Burundians, telling them that if they submitted to their over lordship, and answer the fight whenever they called, they would be allowed to continue as a separate nation, under the protective arm of the empire. The Burundians, having seen a display of imperial might, decided to accept this offer, becoming a proxy nation to the Melentine Empire.

Culture

The Burundians have never been known as fighters. Instead, their merchants and traders can be found worldwide, buying and selling every product imaginable; spices, fabrics, slaves, as some examples.   They are considered the best when it comes to commerce, and can even be found as far as Alantris, despite the harrowing journey; in order to make such a voyage, they must traverse The Gap, the Acean Sea, the Sargasso Sea, the Southern Sea, and circumnavigate the Kraken's Wake, then sail around the Bloody Sea through to the Silk Sea, only then arriving at Alantrian Trading Ports.   Not an easy journey, but the potential profits entices any Burundian.   Their capital is Calinar, named so after their old capital in Balwyr, and are lead by a Merchant Prince, rather than a King.
