The Plain of Fear

Current Month: Julwar 2nd: 209, The Fifth Age
The Plain of Fear is a black-rocked expanse roughly 180 mile diameter. It acts as both a protective border to the Holy City of Refuge, and also as a testing ground for the Pantheon's creations.

Geography

Perfectly circular in shape, the Plain of Fear is a geographical impossibility.   Located squarely on the equator, it is constantly covered in thick opaque mist. It is cold, and visibility within the Plain itself can be as short as five feet in front of you, though this can vary.   The plain itself is composed of strange black rocks that, when stepped on, bleed a red liquid. Though it looks to be blood, alchemists have concluded it is not, but rather some other iron based substance.   Some scholars have conculded that the Plain of Fear borders the The Ethereal Plane, or even The Outside, which allows the Pantheon to have more control on the weather and the creatures of the Plain.   The Plain, for the most part, is flat, though, there are large outcroppings of rocks encountered sporadically.

Inhabitants

The Plain of Fear is used by the Pantheon as a testing ground for new life.   These are often strange creatures, such as the Centaur and the Menhir, or even flying whales with long tentacles that drag across the ground.   The most terrifying inhabitant, however, is the great worm known as The Guardian. Gargantuan in size, it attacks anything and everything in sight, leaving giant holes and burrows in the ground. The plain somehow heals these blemishes over time, causing them to vanish in a matter of days.   Despite this danger, it is one of the most heavily traveled places in the world. This is due to what lies at its center; the Holy City of Refuge.

Border Towns

Surrounding the Plain are eight border towns that are used as waypoint for pilgrims into the Plain. These towns are funded by the Refuge leadership, to provide for the families who do not make it across the Plain.
