Northern Helenian League

The Northern Helenian League is the name given to a federation formed by several democratic city-states located in the Northern Islands of the Saphire Sea. While the Corelian League, Marsilis, and other nations are also 'Helenian' in culture, it's the commitment of the Northern League members to democratic run Polis and their cultural ties to Heliopolis that defines the Northern League the most.

Structure

The League of the Northern Islands is loosely connected. More a military alliance than a proper ruling body, representatives from each city-state are sent to gatherings that happen every 3 years at Heliopolis to discuss matters that concern the league as a whole. Each member city is also required to provide a given amount of crewed ships and coin to the League, to be used for peacekeeping efforts and to maintain a small standing army meant to be used to deal with minor threats, or buy time for the League members to raise their own armies in case of need. The League army also serves to dissuade league members from failing their obligations or defecting.

History

The League was founded in the wake of the Taurian War for Saressa, where the unified Taurian Kingdom employed Phoenixian and Thraxian mercenaries to besiege several cities in Saressa, and subsequentially annex them to the Taurian Kingdom . Many City-States then realized that their military might alone would not be sufficient to deter Taurian expansionist intentions, and two large mutual protection pacts were formed, the Northern League, also called Heliopolian League, and the Southern League .
