Dyv
A Dyv (pronounced "dEEv"), also known as a 'Troll', is a group of hideous creatures, commonly believed to have been created by a now thankfully dead god. They are noted for their barbarism and desire to eat just about anything, as well as their fearsome regenerative capabilities that make them nigh-immortal.
Basic Information
Anatomy
A typical adult Dyv stands around 9 feet tall on long, ungainly legs, though there is the belief that Dyv never stop growing, and some have been recorded as reaching 20 feet. Their deceptively thin bodies have thick, rubbery hides coloured in shades of mossy green or putrid greys, and possess long hanging arms that ended in massive claws.
Although they walk upright, Dyv often possess a severe hunch, which causes the backs of their hands to drag on the ground. When they run, their arms dangle still. Despite their awkward physical appearance, Dyv are surprisingly agile and are well adapted to be masterful climbers.
Females are typically larger, and more powerful, than males.
Biological Traits
Perhaps the most well-known fact of Dyv is their infamous regeneration. Whether a slash in its rubbery hide, or a dismembered limb, Dyv can rapidly heal through most wounds. Only acid or fire can arrest the regeneration properties within a Dyv's flesh. Dismembered limbs would continue to attack at opponents even after being severed.
Because of the regenerative properties of Dyv blood, it was extremely valuable. It is considered a vital component of many potions and elixirs. Such that, many a conman will attempt to pass off jars of normal blood as the darker, thicker, more oily genuine article.
Due to the adaptive nature of their physiology, Dyv are especially susceptible to mutation. Although it was uncommon, actions taken throughout a Dyv's life can result in a physical or behavioural change, within the same generation. Dyv are nigh-immortal unless felled by fire or acid, such that it is believed they are incapable of dieing from age. Rather a Dyv will be gravely wounded or have its brain damaged at some point in its brutal life, resulting in an effective 'reboot' of its brain, starting over from a smaller size.
When in heat, Dyv exude a foul-smelling to other species odor that signalls other Dyv they were ready to breed. Experienced adventurers can recognize the smell from a distance.
Additional Information
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Dyv can be found nearly anywhere upon Castores, though they typically keep to mountains. Their largest concentration is in Khaz Vedran, where the Dragons have alternated between trying to make them their servants, or purge them, over the ages.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Dyv senses were unbalanced. They possessed poor hearing and a sensitivity to light, but superior olfactory senses
Civilization and Culture
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Dyv rarely get along with other races. In fact, Dyv rarely get along with other Dyv. During most of a cycle they are regarded as little more than fearsome beasts that need to be put down or avoided at all cost.
During the winter years this can slightly change. Like other races, the Dyv become reliant on Kresnite to avoid the cold. While the cold cannot kill them, being frozen for months, years, or even centuries is not a pleasant experience. Due to the Dyv's often wasteful nature, this means the Dyv spent most of their time hunting Kresnite producing animals, rather than other humanoids. As such, they are known to sometimes cooperate and even befriend other races, provided the other can provide them a steady supply of warmth.
