Transformation

Transformation in the Central Domain is a mysterious and unpredictable process that occurs when mortals are exposed to elemental and astral magics. While attunement transformations can lead to the stable adoption and control of these energies, disruption transformations can be swift and often come with great benefit or cost to the individual. These changes can range from a few extreme physical differences to a complete transformation into a new being altogether.
Despite centuries of study, much about transformations remains shrouded in mystery. The process is not fully understood, and much of what is known has been gathered from firsthand accounts of those who have experienced it. Humans are known to be the quickest race to transform, making them overrepresented in transformed communities, while Dwarves are the most resistant.
As for the changes themselves, some are well-documented while others remain largely unknown. The sources of these transformations range the celestial or infernal, to the fey and demons or being to attuning to the elements, transforming into a new race, or gaining the ability to temporarily adopt animal features. Still, the extent of these changes, and the true cost of the transformation process, remain largely uncharted.
A human might become a majestic Air Genasi, soaring through the skies with the grace of a bird. However, not all transformations are voluntary or beneficial. An Aasimar exposed long enough to the infernal can transform into a fallen Aasimar, their once bright and glorious aura now corrupted and malevolent. On the other hand, an Aarakocra who is exposed to infernal disruption can become a twisted and disfigured Kenku, their once beautiful wings replaced with dark, tattered feathers. The slightest exposure to the feywild can lead to a halfling becoming a mischievous and rambunctious satyr, a creature of the wilds causing pandemonium.
Many races view transformations with both awe and fear, as they are often unpredictable and come with great risk. The Irenic Foundation despises Tieflings and Kenku, viewing them as tainted by infernal magic, while they and the Celestial Realms attempt to cleanse them. The fey magic that emanates from the portal in the Prarie Grove has been known to drive those who are exposed to it to a whimsical alienation from their once understood way of life.
The nature of transformations is a source of mystery, with theories suggesting that it is closely related to animancy, the magic of the soul, or transmutation of the body. Yet, regardless of the underlying mechanism, the transformative power of the Central Domain remains a potent and often terrifying force.
