The Empire of Duram (Do-ram)
Structure
The Empress or Emperor theoretically has total and utter control of the Empire, the ruling family holds all near total sway over the Imperial Court. However the Empire is split up under the control of the Great Clans with each Clan acting much like their own kingdom with some Great Lords even wearing crowns.
Assets
The Empire has a trained standing army of nearly 800,000 soldiers spread out across its territory, they also have a number of forts along its northern borders. Due to a high population spread across its hodings the Empire often employs many hundreds of thousands of levies, slaves and untrained peasants in times of truly bloody war.
History
Duram is the oldest human nation on Louria, having existed in some fashion since a millennia before Moonfall. The Empire was formed during a time in which most humans were separated into small clans, tribes or the most extreme cases, petty kingdoms. Before becoming an empire, the people of the Falcon Clan gathered their strength in the ancient city of Duram'ar Navar. The equipment and resources left by the Sand Elves that previously lived in the city left the Clan equipped with weapons and armour unmatched by humans on Louria at that time. And only a few decades after settling into the city, the Falcon Clan launched its first conquest of the surrounding areas, subjugating and absorbing other clans until its territory spread from the southern coast to the land bridge of Thoroughfare.
A Coalition of clans from the west tried to defeat the Empire. Still, it was overwhelmed and either destroyed or subjugated, and by the year 19900, the final Clan of the west, the Dragon Clan, was absorbed via conquest, and with that final conquest, the Empire of Duram was truly born. Only the wild elves and southern clans of the Emerald Wilds remained independent. Despite many attempts at annexation, the Empire has never been able to gain a proper hold over the region.
Since that time, Duram has been a political juggernaut with near-total control of the southern half of the continent. The harsh and cold weather of the North was the only thing keeping it from ever fully pushing north over the land bridge. But slowly, over time, the Empire moved its borders as far north as the modern-day Duchy of Dantel and as far east to the modern-day Duchy of Therik.
In 20860, a plague of unknown origin known only as Death's Touch infected and spread like wildfire through the Empire's northern territories before spreading slowly southwards. Witchdoctors of Jundum found a cure for the disease and prevented many deaths. Still, the damage had been done, and in its destabilised state, the Empire had to yield control of its northern territories allowing the Swanborn Realms to reclaim old parts.
When the Falradian Empire first came to Louria in 20930 BF, the Duram and Falradia's navies clashed in a battle known to both sides as the First Volley. A Falradian defeat saw a delay in Falradian Empire's expansion into Louria. Still, after the actions of the 34th Expedition, the Falradian Empire would land warriors and later settlers upon the western coast of what would come to be known as Zeron.
The Empire technically provided support during the War of Lost Grace as four thousand Duramic warriors joined an independent army that would be the precursor to the Imperial Guard. Beyond border skirmishes, both Empires let each other to their own devices as Duram were hesitant to test the might of the foreign invaders and the Falradians focussed on the First War of Annihilation against the Empire of Elswaren.
Following the collapse of the Falradian Empire in 21000 BF during the event known as the Moonfall, the Empire launched an invasion into Northern Louria to send the last remnants of the Falradians from Louria. Due to the actions of the Colony's defending Legions led by the renowned Praetor Frederick Crestsword, who handily defeated the Empire's invasion in the Battle of Crestsword Ridge.
The Empire would instead focus on internal affairs for many generations as prolonged drought in the Empire's primary farmlands saw a great famine that would lead to an almost utterly destructive Civil War in the year 21898. This Civil War would last for sixty years and see the Empire effectively built again from close to the ground.
Afterwards, a time of great rebuildingfollowed as a group of three Paladins returned from an epic quest that saw seeds from Binur's Garden and a great wealth of food and gold from the Halls of Penem. This age of rebuilding would end but a few short years before formation of the Kingdom of Falradia, once the Kingdom was established the Empire launched several attacks in an attempt to destroy and disperse the young kingdom before it became too big a threat, faded memories of the Falradian Empire of old fueling the then Emperor with a feeling of fear. Though the Falradians endured the Duramic assault on twelve different occasions but these assaults say the Falradians relying heavily on their mistreated Hill-Men population for mainline infantry this would be one of the factors in the Kingdom's First Civil War in 23021 AF.
Since that time, the Empire has skirmished and waged war against the Kingdom of Falradia in hopes of seizing fertile ground in Thoroughfare and Southern Falradia. At times, the two nations go to war but this is rarely for no purpose other than to satiate egos.
