Mountaineer

The main inhabitants of the eastern Spine. This group of humans tends to be light skinned and dark haired with eyes ranging from blue, green and occasionally brown. The mountaineers tend to build few large towns instead living in fortified villages and fortresses. They have a reputation as fierce warriors and survivors. They are politically disunified divided into numerous small baronies. They often herd sheep and goats, but gain some wealth from controlling the trade routes across the Spine. The one thing that can get the mountaineers organized is the threat of outsiders trying to impose control over the mountain lands.

Beauty Ideals

Mountaineers tend to be fairly uniform in appearence with black or dark brown hair, blue or occasionally green eyes and fair skin.  THis is what they see as normal.  They see people with blond or red hair as exotic and the light brown skin and dark eyes of Southrons is also seen as novel.  This results in travellers from northern or southern lands often receiving lots of attention when they pass through the Spine.

Gender Ideals

Mountaineer society is generally male dominated, but it is not unsual or shocking see women weilding poltical and economic power.  Thanks to the military religious orders it is not unusual for women to become warriors, but more often religion or magic provides a way for them to become independent.

Courtship Ideals

The upper classes generally pursue arranged marriages.  Lower on the social scale meetings with suitable spouses are often done at social events such as festivals or dances with the child generally being able to veto the parent's suggestion.
