Japanese Hill
Starting as a big slum in the 40s, this neighborhood is still somewhat at odds with the law, though virtually everyone had come to terms with its existence. Name comes from significant number of Japanese, Korean and North Chinese migrants who settled here originally and built this neighborhood with their own hands.
Most of activity is going on along the vibrant Main Street (points for naming) running up the hillside. Many colorful businesses have sprung up along it. Locals try to improve their lot with makeshift and sporadic improvements - water is siphoned from the mains and distributed via a completely illegal above ground pipe network. Same with the sewage, though it is (predominantly) below ground. Main street is in paved haphazardly, depending on how rich are businesses nearby. Electricity is generated from solar panels and small wind turbines. Sense of community is strong, and outsiders are unwelcome. If you plan to move here, first few years will be rough, but be patient, be kind to thy neighbor and it will be fine. (It won't).
