City Gate

The City Gate serves as the primary entrance to the Inner Fortress from Mossveil, the older, less affluent part of Dragsa. This gate is not merely a boundary but a statement of power and security, designed to impress and intimidate those who pass through it. As a crucial checkpoint, it embodies the kingdom’s military prowess and architectural ingenuity, standing as a formidable barrier between the bustling life of Mossveil and the solemn grandeur of the Inner Fortress.

Constructed from massive slabs of dark gray stone, the City Gate is a towering structure flanked by two large watchtowers. Each tower is topped with merlons that provide cover for archers and guards, reinforcing the gate's defensive purpose. The gate itself features a heavy iron portcullis, backed by thick wooden doors bound in iron, capable of withstanding siege attacks. Above the archway, a bas-relief depicts the founding of Dragsa, showcasing its legendary heroes and mythic battles.   Approaching the City Gate, one hears the echo of guards’ calls and the clanking of chains as the portcullis is raised or lowered. The smell of cold stone mixed with the iron tang of the gate's metalwork permeates the air, while the touch of the rough stone walls conveys an unyielding strength. The sight of the gate's imposing structure serves as a stark reminder of the divide between the different social strata of the city.   The City Gate is heavily guarded at all times by the elite guards of Dragsa, trained to scrutinize everyone who seeks entry into the Inner Fortress. Security measures include several checkpoints, where visitors must state their business and sometimes submit to searches. Magical wards are embedded in the gate’s structure, designed to detect any unauthorized magical items or spells that could pose a threat to the security of the Inner Fortress.   Beyond its role as a physical barrier, the City Gate is a symbol of the transition from the common life of Mossveil to the seat of power within the Inner Fortress. It is here that the social hierarchy of Dragsa is most palpable, with merchants, dignitaries, and commoners alike feeling the weight of the kingdom’s gaze as they pass through. The gate also serves as a rallying point in times of crisis, where defenders gather to protect the heart of Dragsa from external threats.   The City Gate often becomes a gathering place for public announcements and proclamations. Its steps have witnessed speeches from generals, celebrations of victory, and the somber announcements of war. It stands as a historical monument as well, with locals and visitors drawn to its depictions of Dragsa’s storied past, often leaving offerings or tokens in hopes of gaining favor with the spirits of the heroes portrayed above its arch.
