Beladictrus (Bell-ah-dict-tris)
The Blackguard
Beladictrus, referred to by the Holy Church as 'The Blackguard' or 'Sinbreaker' is one of the nine gods of order.
The Blackguard is widely regarded as a feared but respected member of the pantheon of order. He represents the divine punishment that awaits all those who commit terrible deeds and wicked acts in life. It is said that before the King of Crows can properly pass judgement and send your soul on to the beyond, that it must be cleansed of the darkness it has amassed in a sinful life and thus is turned over to Gehenna for the Sinbreaker to do his work.
Beladictrus is typically depicted as a dark knight brandishing a greatsword that has become his symbol. His armor is usually black but often accented with red to represent the spilt blood of those he has punished. His symbol is most often found in places such as guard barracks, military outposts, and sometimes even courthouses. City guards will typically either have the black blade of the Sinbreaker engraved on their armor or on a charm hidden beneath their clothes.
The Blackguard's offering is usually some manner of ritual sacrifice of personal wealth - livestock, harvest, coin - slaughtered if necessary and then set to burn on a stone altar atop a hill. While sacrifices are not often made to the Blackguard, since He will take his pound of flesh in the end regardless, some have tried to please him to gain the blessing of forging stronger weapons or claiming victory in battle against an enemy.
Other Cultures
The Southern Wilds
Among the Beastkin Races of the Southern Wilds, Beladictrus is called 'Punisher of Wicked' and is worshipped in a similar capacity as He is in the Lower Realms. The difference is mainly in what is defined as 'wicked' and how their punishment is carried out. Instead of seeing the punishment paid after death, the races of the Wilds view the Punisher of Wicked as a natural force for vengeance in the Material world. If you kill a fellow man and claim the Punishment of Wicked as the cause, the elder will typically consult The Speaker of Law in meditation to decide whether the punishment was just.Arkhosia
To the Dragonborn of the Athasian Expanse, the Blackguard is worshipped as Rajiati the Brass Fangs of Justice and like His name suggests He is viewed as the fangs of Io the World Dragon. He is the patron of the Brass Dragonborn and the enforcer of laws and rules. The highest order of guards in Arkhosia bear the title of The Fangs in honor of Rajiati.Dwarven Faith
The Old Faith of the Dwarves do not recognize nor worship Beladictrus. Some scholars believe that the Old Ways usually conflate and combine Him with Rengulus the Devil to worship them as a single entity known as Rockbreaker. The Path of Udira'ja
To those who walk the path of the Crystal of Light, The Blackguard is worshipped as the lesser god Haidalaan the Tribulation. He is responsible for laying forth the trials and hardships that people must faith in order to temper their connection to the Goddess Udira. His symbol is a golden hand with a ruby embedded in the palm.Other Information
