Brom
Son of a gambler and soldier from Breland, Brom and his family fled to the far flung nation of Q'Barra to escape his father's gambling debts, yet they fell upon his shoulders anyway when his father was killed during the Last War. While working in Q'Barra's Dragonshard mines to chip away at the debt, Brom fell through a shaft and found an artifact of terrible power deep in the earth: a cursed blade with unknown (although certainly fiendish) properties. Brom, blissfully unaware of the danger this artifact threatens, took it up and set out for adventure to pay off those family debts faster than the life of a miner ever could. Along the way, fate would have him crossing paths with Jasper, River, Branks, and Sarasa, the five of them becoming traveling companions that quickly built a reputation as capable and daring adventurers.
Brom's sword exhibits some sort of foul power that takes forceful control of him during times of danger and stress, often during the heat of battle. Others have had to intervene more than once to keep him under control, and coming back to reality after being held in the sword's thrall often leaves Brom exhausted and unaware of exactly what happened. Creatures with a more sensitive reception of the supernatural know that something's up with this sword, but as of now, Brom and his companions are unsure of what the truth behind the blade is; although they're certain it must be something nefarious.
Brom's family owes a great debt to the Boromar clan, a criminal gang of halflings with an iron grip on the underworld of Sharn. This debt has accrued interest according to Boromar heir Vigol Boromar, to the tune of 666,000 gp. He's been harassed by the Boromar clan as they try to put the squeeze on Brom, especially since his star as an adventurer is rising. Their attempts to force him into service to pay off the debts have so far been rebuffed as Brom seeks to attain the ridiculous sum of money outside of the Boromar's influence, but only time will tell if his efforts will bear fruit.
