Runefield
"Who builds a city on top of a city, built on top of a city?" -Taryn Wanderfoot
Summary
Runefield is a City that lies on the eastern side of the Northern peninsula of Dane in the Kingdom of Jote. The exact age of Runefield is hard to know since the city has been destroyed and rebuilt many times for various reasons. Occasionally the echoes from Runefields past crawl up from the depths below and wreak havoc frightening off the average man or woman but to a Runefelder, it builds character and bragging rights.Demographics
The city of Runefieldcovers an area of approximately 170 acres, with a total population of 10 thousand people. The population is largely human (37%), with smaller numbers of dwarves (20%), elves (18%), halflings(10%), gnomes (7%), half-elves (5%) and half-orcs (3%).
Government
The City is run by the Survivors. Survivor is a title given to citizens who distinguished themselves in the last disaster. no more than for Survivors can named from the more recent disaster, one of which is elected to be the leader while the rest are given the rank and added to the council of Survivors who advise the Lead Survivor.
Defences
There are a series of watchtowers positioned in the areas surrounding the mound. The watchtowers look for the coming of the next threat and watch the borders of the cities lands as much as the city itself for danger. At the base of the Mound are stone ramparts and gates for defense of the city. Inside is a vast and dizzying array of walls and defenses that date back through various disasters of Runefield. Navigation of the Mound is best left to seasoned runefielders. These entirely illogical walls and internal defenses have saved the city more than once as invading armies have trapped themselves in various sections with no escape.
History
The history of Runefield is difficult to define. Most agree that it predates the formation of the Ironwood Conclave by many years and others who have ventured into the depths of the Mound have say they have found evidence of a city below from the second age. Runefelders often date things by the last destruction and are known to argue over whether a certain event leveled enough of the city to be "worth changing the calendar".
Tourism
Many people visit Runefield to explore her secrets and depths. There are countless legends that surround the mound and what is below and when it was intered and by whom. The locals only encourage those legends to encourage more trade and renown of their fair city. The many events of Runefields past do much to spread the legends.
Geography
The city proper sits on top of a rise in the middle of an otherwise flat area. This rise or "The Mound" as it is called locally is the main part of the city is built. The Mound has two small castles on top and surrounded by walls and various battlements to provide defense for the city in case of an attack or siege. The Mound is surrounded by farms, fields, and various agricultural lands. Many of which are rich in minerals and other rare elements making the ground and crops highly sought after. At the edge of the fields is the border of the Crumbling Wood.
Natural Resources
Due to the strange nature of the Crumbling Wood most lumber has to be brought in from other sections of Kingdom of Jote at least that is lumber that needs to last. The crumbling wood provides ample firewood but it doesn't store or last. The ground around The Mound is quite fertile and provides excellent grains in the common fields. Some of the areas around the Mound are called "The Exotics". The exotics are various lands that display various oddites. This ground is sought after by many Runfielder for the lucrative things they grow. However The Exotics are not exactly stable investments some areas have produces magically enhance fruits and grains or even Crystals for years and some for a season the become desolate or worse spawn corruptor vines. The goods grown from this lush and unexpected area are its main exports.
