Chapter 11: Carrion, My Wayward Golem

General Summary

4th of Abarat, nighttime.   Three large horrifying creatures began to attack the party. Comprised of various animals, sewn together and reeking of decay, they turned their attention towards Zinnia, who was lying unconsious and floating in a pool of holy water. It seemed that most of their attention was focused on trying to steal her away. With powerful jaws and claws, they fought their hardest against the party. While fire seemed to harm them more than normal, they seemed tougher than they should have been against other types of attacked. Their foul stench additionally sickened many in the party, filling their minds with the raw stitched flesh and maggots that poured out of their wounds. They seemed mission bound, remembering shortly into their attack why they were there and focusing much of their attention on Zinnia and dragging her away. Tough though they were, Jacquora was able to dispatch one by slicing it's throat open. Lenihlra ended the other two by using effective fire magic to incinerate them.   After quickly healing everyone, Falaern received a call on a micasious stone and left to take it. After receiving the call the stone disintegrated, and she checked on her guards, who were dead, and rejoined the group. While she was busy, the other three comforted and questioned Zinnia, who had woken up. She recognized the three and thanked them for rescuing her from the sewers. She told them that the blonde man, Wesley P'dash, was working with an old noble house in Old Athelis, a neighborhood in the northeast of Lorisen. She also told them that his mother was the one to have him stay in Lorisen to retrieve Linn and that the other two missing people in Moldoryn were possible with her when she was being held and brainwashed in this nobleman's house. She informed them that most of the dozens of spellcasters she had seen were being moved elsewhere while a few were being utilized in Lorisen to "serve the Empire" in some way.   Falaern told the rest of the party that she had received news from her two individuals who were working a case in Ilythyra (for more detailed information on this case, see The Valient Never Taste of Death but Once). They found out that a librarian in the city had been leaking contraband information and spellbooks to Wesley, whose real name is Sylas Dewhep. This librarian was his father, Martyn Dewhep. Additionally, he knew that his son was working for the House of Luthyra. Before Martyn could be interrogated further, he was assassinated.   Falaern then paid the head priest a large sum to resurrect her guards and threatened them to not tell what had happened here. Before leaving the church, three of the individuals, Falaern, Inhe, and Lenihlra, received a vision as they passed Thydona Ezohr's statue. She said "You've done good. You saved one. Help." Lenihlra asked her who they were supposed to help to which she replied "Help me." When asked where she was, she replied "Close." Ihne and Jacquora additionally noticed a soft glow emanating from the statue that quickly faded.   They all then left and made their way to Purple Reigns and Arik, who gave them all a place to sleep for the night. Falaern also paid the party 150 pp, or 500 gp each for their hard work.
One of the grotesque figures that attacked the group.
