Weekiburg
Weekiburg is a smaller fishing town located upon the western coast of the Kingdom of Columba. Reliant upon trade with Suwannee and other towns in the area, Weekiburg is best known for the highly controversial Oracle that claims to have premonitions and visions of the future. While borderline heretical, the Oracle has been allowed to continue operations for years, having gained the favor and protection of the local aristocracy. Outside of visitors for the Oracle, Weekiburg is a typically quiet community, best known for the local fresh water springs and lumber in the region.
Demographics
The town of Weekiburg consists almost entirely of humans and a handful of halfbreeds, predominantly half-orcs. While a handful of other races have settled down here over the years, most integrate fairly seamlessly into the society, keeping the humans on the top of the heap. Nearly all of these humans are Columbans, but a handful of Jakonians and others have settled in Weekiburg, some of whom keep their distinct cultural identities.
Government
Weekiburg is directly administered by House Hass and its reigning patriarch. The leader of the house has full authority to appoint and dedicate particular leaders and delegates to be in charge of various types of operations and administrations needed to maintain local infrastructure and construction. The government rarely interferes much in the undertakings of individuals, only showing up to occasionally levy taxes when needed, and they prefer to focus these levies upon travelers and trade caravans going along the coastal road.
Defences
Outside of the levies of House Hass, there are only twenty guards who are delegated to keeping the daily peace. They are supplemented by the Hass levies and house guard, who undertake the protection of the coast and the caravan road from north to south. In a time of crisis, a militia of nearly three hundred people could be called up to help protect the community. The town itself lacks any proper town wall for defenses, however, making the defense of the town itself impractical. The only defensive structure are a series of watch towers and Castle Hass, essentially a fortified palace.
Industry & Trade
The majority of trade and production in Weekiburg revolves around lumber and fishing. Very little else takes place of value or export, and the town government gains most of its wealth by taxing those who use the coastal road. The Oracle also brings in lucrative gold, in addition to the invaluable advice she regularly provides to the patriarch of House Hass in terms of politics and local management.
Infrastructure
The roads of Weekiburg are unpaved, and are nearly entirely dirt, with no true sewage or sanitation system. The roads are kept lit with a mixture of torches and oil lamps, with the latter being only present in the wealthier parts of the town. The docks themselves are well maintained, thanks to a coalition of local fishermen and the Oracle. Outside of the town, the coast road is kept protected and safe with several small watchtowers, designed to be concealed from passing view, while allowing a rapid alert of guards to bandit activity or corsair raiding parties from the sea.
Assets
Weekiburg possesses a humble marketplace, mostly catering to local demand and goods. Very few luxuries are regularly sold here, with most such things being sold by merchant caravans or purchased in Suwannee. The biggest draw for nearly all those arriving in Weekiburg is the Oracle. Said to be descended from a human and the last of a lost race of precognitive sea people, she is known to provide accurate and occasionally veiled predictions of one's future. She operates out of a small temple built upon a dock jutting out into the Circle Sea. A booming trade has been created from those catering to visitors to the Oracle, and it is known that you can pay fifty gold pieces to receive an answer to any question about one's past, present, or future. The Oracle's Rest Inn is well known as an opulent establishment, considered to be one of the finest places to stay in the entire Jakonian Peninsula.
Guilds and Factions
House Hass is the preeminent power in Weekiburg, but recently they have been coming into greater and greater conflict with the Church of the One Sun. The Church is greatly opposed to the operation of the Oracle, believing that a woman being able to tell the future is heretical at best, and witchcraft at worst. Unfortunately, nothing she has done has proven illegal, and her position of influence with the lord has made it difficult to remove her. Therefore, the Church has begun regularly working to undermine House Hass and increase local dissent, hoping to increase the pressure and make keeping the Oracle safe too expensive of a proposition.
