Several days after Tia's transformation, their escort is targeted by bandits. Tia uses her new aura for the first time, ruining their ambush and allowing Martin time to regain control of the situation.

With a bit of misdirection and shadow summoning, the bandits attempt to kidnap Tia or her father with the intention to ransom them. However, Tia instinctively uses her newly gained aura to defend her father. She has little control over this ability but she did slow them down enough for Martin and his unit to leap into action. Martin cuts one bandit down while his men surround the rest of their party and force them to surrender. When the captives turn out to be Martin's old clan, he enacts a secret arrangement the crown has with this clan. He sends Allen and Tia ahead to set up camp while he 'collects recruits' from the bandits, who possess rare dark racial magic. This includes his own nephew Euan.
