The Dragonlands Historical Society

The Dragonlands Historical Society is a prestigious yet somewhat niche organisation dedicated to preserving, studying, and promoting the rich history of the Dragonlands. With a presence in every major city and its headquarters in Rokthorl, the Society comprises scholars, archaeologists, and enthusiasts who share a passion for unearthing forgotten lore, analysing ancient relics, and maintaining the cultural heritage of the Dragonborn. While their primary focus is on the past, their work often informs diplomatic and political decisions, making them a quiet yet significant force in the Dragonlands.

Structure

The Dragonlands Historical Society follows a formal hierarchy, with clear ranks that denote authority, expertise, and responsibilities. These ranks are mostly based on scholarly achievements, contributions to the preservation of history, and experience within the Society.
Archscholar
This is the highest-ranking member of the Society, responsible for overseeing all branches, setting long-term goals, and making critical decisions on the Society's operations.
High Chronicler
The second-highest rank, the High Chronicler is responsible for maintaining the official records of the Society, overseeing the archives, and ensuring the accuracy of historical documents. They also manage relations between different city branches.
Keeper of Relics
The Keeper of Relics is in charge of maintaining and protecting the Society's collection of artefacts and relics. They are experts in identifying and categorising ancient objects, as well as overseeing their safe storage.
Loremasters
Loremasters are high-ranking scholars responsible for leading research projects, publishing historical treatises, and guiding lower-ranking members. Each Loremaster usually specialises in a particular field, such as archaeology, Dragonborn history, or magical artefacts.
Scholar Adepts
Scholar Adepts are mid-ranking members who have proven their scholarly competence but are still gaining recognition. They assist Loremasters in research, fieldwork, and documentation, while working on independent projects.
Junior Researchers
Junior Researchers are new members of the Society who have been admitted based on their scholarly promise. They work under the guidance of senior members, assisting with basic research tasks, cataloguing documents, and conducting fieldwork when necessary.
Archivists
Archivists are responsible for managing the vast repositories of books, documents, and artefacts that the Society has collected. They are highly respected for their ability to organise and retrieve information quickly.
Custodians
Custodians are non-scholarly members tasked with protecting the Society's physical assets, such as their libraries, relics, and excavation sites. They work closely with the Keeper of Relics to ensure the safety of the Society's treasures.

Noteworthy Symbols and Badges

  • Sigil of the Eternal Scroll: The primary symbol of the Society, depicting an ancient scroll wrapped around a dragon's talon, represents the balance between knowledge and power.
  • The Quill of Memory: A golden feather quill that marks the leadership of the High Chronicler, used to symbolise the preservation of knowledge.
  • Culture

The Society values knowledge, curiosity, and the meticulous preservation of history above all else. Members are trained to approach their work with caution and respect for the relics and knowledge they handle, seeing themselves as stewards of The Dragonlands' legacy. While they encourage intellectual debate and exploration, the Society fosters an environment of humility, recognising that understanding the past requires careful, collective effort. Members tend to have a formal and methodical approach to their work but enjoy a strong camaraderie. There is a slight air of elitism, as membership is granted to only the most dedicated scholars and researchers.

    Public Agenda

The Society is focused on preserving historical artefacts, researching ancient texts, and educating The Dragonlands’ populace on their cultural heritage. They maintain strong ties with Noble Houses and offer their expertise in the form of historical consultancy, especially in times of political or diplomatic strife. Their aim is to prevent historical knowledge from being lost and ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the past.

  • History

The Dragonlands Historical Society was founded during a period of relative peace, several centuries ago, as a response to the rapid modernisation of The Dragonlands. Concerned that the knowledge of their ancestors would be lost in the rush for progress, a group of scholars, including renowned historian Eldinor Flamecrest and Alruth Brightscale, sought to preserve their heritage. Initially, the Society focused on maintaining historical records but quickly expanded its efforts to include archaeology and cultural preservation, establishing itself in every major city. Over time, the Society grew influential, acting as both a repository of knowledge and an adviser to Dragonlands leadership, particularly in times of crisis.
