Sandtown
Sandtown is a desert fort town built around a natural spring. It is famous for the Lighthouse statue of "Profit Mort Fazzee" that is lit each night to guide the desert caravans across the desert and into the city. The city is the only desert oasis in the centre of the Karnak Desert and is only reachable after a roughly 7-day journey by desert caravan from either the Eastern Karmak Sea in the south-east or from the capital Ceration in the north.
The population is about 61,100.
Demographics
About 85% of the population is from the Liptic People with about 10% being from The people from the Eastern Karnak Sea and about 5% from the other states in the Nearing River Valley states.
About 60% of the population is directly involved in Trade or the Trade Markets which are the centrepiece of the city's economy. About 20% of the population is directly involved with the running of the The True Way Temples and this is the 2nd largest driver of the economy in Sandtown.
Government
Sandtown is the regional government capital. The "Feezor" family is the local noble family of the desert clans and have been in charge of the local government for centuries.
Defences
The city gates are closed each night between 10 pm and 5 am.
Infrastructure
The settlement has 3 major trade markets in the city, "The Spice Market", "The Treasure Market" and "The Meat and Produce Market". The city also has two very large Camel Stables which are essential to the cross desert trade. The city also has also 5 major temples operated by the The True Way. Lastly, of all the large buildings in the city, the Lighthouse of Sandtown is the most famous of them all and has stood for over 300 years.
History
The settlement began as a small overnight stopping point on a natural spring in the middle of the desert trade routes. It stayed a relatively small town until the sect The True Way made it their holy city in 14205. With that, the city population swelled and became an important regional centre. The trade markets grew up after this point.
Tourism
Being a holy city there are many tourists following the "sacred ways" walking paths in the desert that all lead to Sandtown. These are historic religious tracks that follow the historical journeys of Profit Mort Fazzee many journies in the desert.
Sandtown also lays on the main North-South route across the desert so has many travellers and tradesmen who pass through the town on their path.
Architecture
Narrow streets with high apartments on all sides shade the population from the desert heat. Many streets and all the markets are covered by fabric sails to add extra sun protection to the city.
