Workman's Ward

"Any home is better than the mines, but the Lost Cart is better than any home, so I think I'll have another and fall asleep out back. Again."
The lower class and the few members of Avraathe who live below the poverty threshold call the Workman Ward home. With proximity to the mines making this district desirable for those who work the mines or railways, it is the only potential benefit of living in the northern ward.   The structures are often stark and simple, made cheaply with the unadorned grey stone readily available in the mines north of the gate.

Landmarks in Workman's Ward

Taverns

The Thirsty Vein: A dingy, worn-out tavern where the down and out go to drink away a day's wages in exchange for some god damn peace and quiet.   Gold Rush: The gabling tavern of choice in the Workman's Ward, though it has probably never actually seen a gold coin pass across it's bar in years. The most popular Gambling Games played here are Dwarven Roulette and a copper-buy-in of In-Between.   Lost Cart: The most popular and raucous of the three taverns, where the majority of miners go just to enjoy the few hours above surface level. The best place for catching news and rumors or playing games like darts or arm wrestling.

Stores

Tools for Trade: A simple storefront offering new and used tools that accepts union credit or repairable tools or other favors as suitable payment. Much of the half-orc population that is able to rise from the sewer rat position to work in the mines are reliant on this long-time institution for being able to make the transition. When it began to falter ten years ago, Orin Underfury subsidized it and kept it open, though its widely known it operates at a loss.   Stone on Loan: For those who need to build or repair their home but can't afford the raw materials in bulk, this store will offer simple loans of the stone for a portion of hours worked in the mine. Similarly to Tools for Trade, this establishment was purchased by Orin Underfury to expand its ability to serve the community.   Union's Warehouse: A general warehouse store of equipment for the mines and basic meals in pail lunches offered at a discount price for the union members. Lines can be seen forming in the hour leading up to shift changes regularly.   Copper Cart: The discount general store that offers basic items like clay dinnerware, candles, and other odds and ends.

Other

Orin Underfury's Keep: A taller than average dwarf with a vibrant red beard and envious mustache, Orin still maintains the powerful build from his days as one of the most productive mine vein managers. After inheriting the Grenrak Mines two decades ago, Orin decided to keep his home in the Workman Ward and build it up into a small keep that would allow him to manage all of his affairs without having to go into the southern districts. Knowing the political implications, Orin enjoys requiring his peers and fellow mine operators to make the trek north to meet with him. Orin runs almost entirely dwarven shifts in his mines, making sure the pockets of community have a chance to work and trusting his brethern to return the best work as well. He is, however, one of the first to hire half-orcs in bulk as well.   The Northen Gate: The main thoroughfare for all of the railways leading between the mines to the north and the refineries and smiths in Craftsmen's Corner.
