Obo

Obo is built in the ruins of a much larger Old World city. Despite the space available to it, the town proper of Obo is compacted into a relatively small area. Homes and small shops are often built inside the remains of ancient factories and other large buildings, with multiple small buildings packed into the larger building's frame. The streets are crowded and usually thin, being little more than whatever space happens to exist between buildings--and that space is often filled with all kinds of supplies, machinery, and junk.   Despite the lack of space, there are a lot of motor vehicles in Obo, mostly owned by richer townsfolk. Navigating the crowded space is difficult in these vehicles, but the owners like to drive and race these vehicles along the streets of the larger ruins surrounding Obo. Because of this, the town contains many vehicle repair shops.   In addtion to these races, the surrounding ruins are home to various small gangs and people who can't afford to live anywhere else. Living in the ruins is dangerous, however, as they also house many creatures from the surrounding plains. The town proper has fortifications made from the ruined buildings surrounding it and providing protection from these creatures.   The surrounding ruins also contain an ancient oil refinery that has been converted into a temple to the Great Intelligence. It is maintained by a small group of Minds.   There is also the remains of an airport in the western outskirts of the ruins. Although it is not operational, on very rare occasions, people who own working flying vehicles will use its landing strips.

Demographics

About two-thirds of Obo's population is relatively stable, comprised of people (stock humans and mutants in a roughly 2 to 1 ratio, plus a couple dozen synthetics) born and raised here, and who will likely die here. The other third is comprised of a much more variable group who come and stay for a few month to a few years to even a couple of decades before moving on again. In many cases, these people just can't afford to stay in Obo any longer and end up forced into the ruins.   Due to its fairly central location in Taebur, Obo sees a lot of travellers (merchants, nomads, and others) coming and going at any particular time. The total number of people actually in the town can reach as high as 2000 at times, making its already claustrophobic streets feel even more so.

Government

Obo is run by the Families, which is a conglomeration of the richest families in the town. The number of families included varies over time, but is usually four or five, and currently numbers five. The Families employ a police force comprised entirely of synthetics to maintain order in the town.
