The nalóxans1 are a collection of nomadic, semi-nomadic and settled tribes predominantly found on the Nómek Plain of northeastern Emlas and western Laxilþía, along with three other tribes inhabiting the empire of Dalra in eastern Emlas.
Although many of their specific customs and lifestyle vary significantly from one tribe to another, virtually all share certain cultural traits such mythology, language and importance of songs and poetry.

Culture

Apparel

Though it varies somewhat between regions, traditional nalóxan clothing generally consists of a short, sleeveless woolen tunic, often very colourful, along with fox-skin worn as a hat, especially for warriors. This clothing persists even in the colder regions of the plain, as nalóxans are remarkably resistance to cold weather, while in the warmer region along the coast of Úrtal Sea and shores of Móþon Lake, they wear little more than a loincloth, if anything.
Dalran nalóxans sometimes wear cloaks, though mostly for decoration rather than protection against the elements.
Body- and face paint and tattoos are known by most tribes, the latter often consist of dots, lines or imitation of the patterns on their clothing.

Cuisine

Mutton, goat meat, fish, wild game, honey and dairy products are staple food of most nalóxans, those living along the borders of Dalra and Resak also have access to bread, various vegetables and fruits. To the far north along the coast of Nixma Sea, shellfish and seals are the main source of food.
A notable exception to his are shamans, particularly to the south, who avoid meat and only subsist on milk, honey, wild bulbs and tubers.

Religion

Major deities

Each nalóxan tribe has its own pantheon of gods, culture heroes and spirits associated with certain places, some borrowed form the mythology of neighbouring cultures, but the following deities are worshipped by virtually every tribe under different names.
Dáan
Dáan /tau:an/, known as Túanna /thu:an:a/ in Dalra, is the goddess of hunting and the earth.
Þráalga
Þráalga /θrau:a:lka/ is god of the sky, depicted as a horse with golden hooves or a pegasus, who causes thunderstorms as he travels along the sky.

Funerary practices

Burial is the norm among the nalóxans, many tribes carve grave-markers out of stone or wood in the shape of warriors, while those in or near the border of Dalra make beehive-shaped tombs for their chiefs and shamans. Some of the easternmost tribes also practice endocannibalism as part of their funeral rites, a practice adopted from the neighbouring Tingreni.

Warfare

Endemic warfare is widespread among the nalóxan tribes, where warriors traditionally fight using axes, clubs or spears and generally only carry crescent-shaped wicker shields as their sole protection. Dalran mercenaries have long been recruited by the settled people of Laxilþía and Emlas.
