Session 3 - The Return to Saltmarsh
General Summary
After the tragic death of Tycho's mentor, the group decided to spend the night the destoyed village, before taking off to track down the orcs that raided the village. During the night, when Drazer was on watch, a large creature began to make a stir near the food stores. As he woke Tycho and Kray, they began to move in closer, with Kray in the lead. As they quietly moved in, Tycho stepped on a branch and alerted the large creature to the group’s presence. On further inspection, it was discovered to be a bear.
Kray positioned himself behind the bear to attempt to slay the beast. As the bear charged at Kray, Drazer tackled it, holding it to the ground. Tycho and Kray then began to stab and bludgeon it to death.
After the bear’s demise, Kray attempted to skin the bear for its pelt, but ruined it by repeatedly stabbing it with his dagger. Drazer then took the now tenderized meat, and built a roasting pit, using the spears left behind by the orcs as spits. The bear was slowly roasted overnight. During his watch, Tycho began to season the bear with special ancient herbs that the firbolgs used.
When it was Kray’s turn for watch, a great rumbling occurred arising the group. As they awoke a giant land shark sprang from the ground, and began to feast on barbecued bear. Tycho seeing his hard work seasoning go to waste, attempted to scare it away. In doing so angered the beast, who then sprang on him, tearing him to shreds. Kray attempted to find an opening in its armored hide, but the thing swiped at him with its claws, nearly killing him as well. Seeing portions of Tycho’s body and blood thrown feet away, the rest of the party began their hastily withdraw. As they ran away from the village, they saw the beast taking what was left of Tycho’s body and burrowing back underground. The group returned to the village, to scour the remains to find any useful loot. They found a Shellie, and a casket of Durian wine.
With their friend dead, the party decided to head back to Sanctuary, to regroup. On the way upstream toward the Cygnet Rive, a swarm of insects began to harass them. After some struggle the insects were dispatched.
Arriving at Sanctuary, the party warned the guards of a rampaging orc group, and requested to sleep the night before continuing their adventure. They were informed they could stay, but had to leave early in the morning. Upon entering the tavern, they were greeted by Urist McEnforcer, a friendly Dwarf, who had the ability to heal those that were injured. After a night of drinking and conversation, and some sleep, the party was awakened by the city watch and encouraged to leave, and so they did with little argument. Urist mentioned some Star-metal in the hills and a haunted mansion. The Dwarf agreed to join the party as they headed back to Saltmarsh.
Arriving at Saltmarsh, the party separated for a time, with Drazer taking a job as a bouncer at the Merry Mermaid, while Kray began work on a fishing boat called the "Octopus”. The Professor returned to his studies, and Urist looked to help those in need at the Serene Temple.
The professor, Kray, and Urist informed the council of the potential band of orcs rampaging the frontier. The Council, presided over by Eustace Osgood - the King's Reeve, was made up Jasper Smiel- shipowner, Philharmonius Fortune - a silversmith, Alston Salley - the owner of the saltern, as well as the Merry Mermaid, and Ferdous Crugg a dwarf import/export merchant and the owner of the Scale and Tail. The council took the matter seriously, and thanked the group for the news they brought, but decided that it was up to the authorities in Sanctuary and Covenant Colony to deal with, as the firbolg village lay on the edges of their land.
With jobs in town the party decided to attempt to take some time to settle in before venturing forth to new adventure.
