Itege

An Itege, or Empress Consort was the names for the first wife of the Emperor. The emperor would crown her himself on the Great Table, the same place that Makonnen, the Unifier was crowned by the 12 chiefs.   The name is said to come from the old Enegua lands meaning something akin to "First among royal wives."

Duties

The Itege is the head of the consorts, which means that she also picks women to be in the emperor's hiram and if the emperor choses to marry another wife, she is the one who voices the group opinion to their husband. Also as head of the household, she is in charge of the tent-pitchers and often held council with the wives of chieftains and pillars when in their land. She also helped her husband with the arranged marriages of their children.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

Removal or dismissal depended on the offense and would range from death or exile in one of the Cold Palaces. During the time of Emperor Kasaye, after finding out his Jakaphet wife, of the K'eyari tribe, betrayed him for her father, he is said to have made her and her family walk through the lands of the Salted Plains with whatever supplies they could carry without a beast of burden. The family, proud and head held high followed the Patriarch of the family, who stripped naked and walked in the direction of a Salt Storm never to be seen from again.
