Wyverns

Wyverns are small, draconic animals popular across Halth'aire as pets and familiars for mages, nobles, and other influential and wealthy people. Being around the size of a goat or ram, wyverns are small, two-legged draconids with wings that act as their upper limbs or arms. They are seen as friendly yet independent animals native to many parts of Halth'aire, from the plains of Almor to the forests of Pwenlylyn. They first arose in popularity as domesticated animals shortly after the Wellspring's initial burst of magic. It is thought that certain species of birds were turned into these wyverns, become somewhat apex predators in their ecosystems due to their innate magic. Mages and nobles began to seek out these creatures, seeing them as symbols of wealth and power while also being intrigued by their magical capabilities. In the modern day, most mages tend to bear these wyverns as their familiars, and they've remained popular pets among the wealthy and powerful.   Wyverns are characterized by their small size and bipedal nature, lacking arms and instead bearing small wings. They come in a wide variety of colors and bear various facial shapes, with derivations most likely being caused by their origins across a variety of differing avian species. They are somewhat cat-like in nature, being independent and somewhat mischievous, but are widely seen as friendly and loyal animals. They have some innate arcane powers, such as being able to cast certain, mostly benign cantrips or having similar breath-based magic to that of dragonborn peoples.
