The attacker captured at the Lightening Rod is actually an Elven victim of the Dark Mages.
The Elf reveals that the Dark Mages are siphoning his soul like a battery, just like how the towers use the crystals for power. Eli insists on helping the Elf, but they can not remove the blood magic collar from around the vicitms neck without a key. Balthazar discovers the Professor is kidnapped, and can not locate a key to remove the collar.
