Lacorré

And when she played the coral ocarina, it was as though all the waves had joined her in harmony and the sea became still and the soft notes soothed the tyrannical beast as no blade could have—The Book of Lacorré

The Sea's Lover

Lacorré is the goddess of the sea, sailors, currents, unmarried maidens, thieves, travelers, peasants, smallfolk, serfs, slaves, and those that live on the margins of society. She is a member of the Heavenly Council, though many of the myths surrounding her depict her as an antagonist or a trickster figure even among those on the Council. Her faith is kept by many along the coastal regions of Holos but also inland, as she is a popular deity for commoners and those who do not often feel served by the rest of the gods on the Council or the rest of society at large.
Some inland societies also worship her male aspect as Komombo, the Crocodile. This form was popular during the Mithril Era, particularly in Ancient Temekan, where the veneration of the Niru River and its floods was more important than the distant ocean tides. As Komombo, Lacorré retains many of her characteristics while also gaining traits associated with male deities. Komombo is associated with rivers and lakes, with robbery, and adultery, but also with protecting children and of male fertility. Today, Komombo is rarely venerated among followers of the Heavenly Council, though many living in the tropical river valleys of Nioa, Hakoa, Iroa, and Teroa continue to keep his traditions.

Personal history

See the legend of "Lacorré Steals the Heart of the Sea"   After eloping with Takuroa, Lacorré participated in a great battle known as the Deep Wars. The Great Old One, Kahré, attempted to escape her abyssal prison beneath the Plane of Water and attacked the Coral Castle where Lacorré and Takuroa lived. The Ocean Titan and the Sea's Lover fought bravely, but soon required the aid of Telerashi. Upon seeing that her sister's death would mean the flooding of the Material Plane, Telerashi put aside her grudge against Lacorré and Takuroa and helped fend off the invasion of sahuagin, merrow, and kuo-toa. However, it was only with the help of the fabled Merking, Yammaula, that the forces of the Lacorré and her allies were able to repel Kahré.   Yammaula was prideful after he defeated Kahré, and went to Lacorré looking for a carnal reward. When the Sea's Lover rebuked him, Yammaula was filled with boiling fury. He created a magical object called the Merking's Conch that is said to have been able to control all those who dwell within the seas and Planes of Water. He used it on Lacorré to make her his bride. Yet he could not use it on Lacorré's loyal ghost sharks for they swim through the Realm Ethereal. Upon seeing their mistress in distress, the ghost sharks attacked Yammaula, killing him and freeing the Sea's Lover of his enchantment.

Morality & Philosophy

Before she became a goddess associated with the sea, she was seen as a goddess who looked after the downtrodden, the travelers, the thieves and those who did not gain the favor of the Heavenly Council but were not truly evil. Besides Balan, she is the most frequently invoked in criminal trials as well as at the Heavenly Council’s Judgments.   When mortals die at sea, their souls enter the murky Ethereal Plane but cannot be retrieved by Milcon’s death dogs. Lacorré, took pity on the first souls to die at sea and so sent her own servants, the ghost sharks, to guard and escort the souls of the dead until the Moon’s Eve.
  • To this day, Lacorré is worshiped as the protector of the drowned.
  • Some say the reason for storms that drown sailors is because Rashi continues to try to find ways to make Lacorré’s duty more arduous.
  • Though Lacorré’s ghost sharks are powerful protectors, if they cannot reach the body in time, the servants of Kahré the Abyssal One, may offer the dying a choice between immortality and death.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Many of the myths surrounding Lacorré show her being the consort of multiple gods and goddesses, even across pantheons and even with mortals. A few examples include Zwakhasis, Kōs, Nyphros, Oheilion, Rheseldar, the Lavender Queen, and her eventual husband, Takuroa. Lacorré is said to have spurned the advances of Yammaula, the Merking.

Myths

Lacorré Steals the Sea's Heart

After the War of the Titans, the Gods of the Heavenly Council made an accord with the Primordial Elemental Titans. The Gods decided to seal their pact with a marriage between the eldest of the Titans, Takuroa, with the eldest of the Gods, Rashi. It seemed a good match—for Takuroa was the ruler of the seas and the tides and the oceans, and Rashi was the ruler of the wind and the rain and the freshwaters. But during the great feast between the two parties, the Takuroa caught a glimpse of the loveliest of the Gods, Lacorré and fell deeply in love with her.   Between the meals, Takuroa called Lacorré outside to where the Celestial Mountains met the Plane of Water and tried to show how much he cared for her. He created the dolphins and whales of the world—gentle creatures that were similar in shape to her favorite creatures, the sharks. Lacorré was smitten, though some say she was more interested in spiting her sister than actually marrying with the Titan. She asked her father if she, not Rashi, would be a better fit for Takuroa. But Uriah forbid it, and sent her away to marry the Gilded Crafter God, Zwakhasis.   Lacorré did not like Zwakhasis much; the God of Crafts was good with his hands and made many beautiful for her, but Lacorré was a young goddess full of spirit and unbridled energy. She could not stand being cooped up inside his workshop within the walls of the Celestial Mountains. So when she realized she had become pregnant with Zwakhasis's child, she went to the Plane of Water and spoke with three sea hags, one old, one young, and one in . They gave her a special coral ocarina in exchange for three magic pearls; one with the power of Beauty, one with the power of Immortality, and one with the power of the Great Knowledge. Yet the pearls that Lacorré gave the hags were not true pearls of power but clever traps. When the first hag used the Pearl of Beauty, she became so beautiful that all the creatures of the world wanted to mate with her. The first hag fled to her sister's home where the second hag had just used Pearl of Great Knowledge. The second hag now knew that she would never be as beautiful her sister, so when the first hag arrived, the second hag killed her. The second hag was then killed by the mob of angry mortals that had fallen in love with the first hag. The third hag felt very smug about all of this and she continued to live for a long time, content with her bargain. But one day, when she was emerging from the sea onto the shore, she was stung by a cone snail. The agony was so great he wanted to pass on, but he could not for he was cursed with eternal life.   With that, Lacorré used the magic of the sea hags to summon a great beast of the Plane of Water, a Leviathan. She lured the creature to the shores the Celestial Mountain. The Leviathan attacked her for this and the two began to fight. The other Gods tried to help, but Lacorré was clever, and had summoned a Leviathan blessed with the power of the sea spirits and they protected the beast. Finally, Lacorré withdrew her sacred coral ocarina and played a special song. It soothed the beast and after swimming in tandem with it, Lacorré led it gently back to its home without bloodshed.   Lacorré then went to Zwakhasis and said that these creatures would continue to threaten the Celestial Mountains and the Material Plane world unless she went into the sea to keep them at bay. Zwakhasis was reluctant to let his pregnant wife leave him so Lacorré suggested that he carry the child to term inside his thigh, which she said would be a far safer place than her womb. Zwakhasis agreed and placed the child in his thigh. After a hard birth, Zwakhasis and Lacorré had borne a son, Qingu. The child inherited his father's industrial nature with his mother's wits and became the god of commerce.   After avoiding bearing a child to Zwakhasis, Lacorré found Takuroa fighting with his new wife in the sea. She reminded the Titan of his promises to her and they eloped to Takuroa's realm beneath the waves. They knew that Uriah could do nothing to stop them, for his power fades beneath the waters. But Telerashi, bitter over being rebuked continued to quarrel with them. The Tempest’s Fury still unleashes her wind and rain on the seas but Takuroa protects Lacorré beneath the waves in their underwater Coral Castle. To this day, Lacorré lives only in the Coral Castle beneath the Plane of Water, and only goes to face the other gods each Moon's Eve.
