Wendal Padfoot (WHEN-dull PAD-foot)

Wendal Padfoot

To most people, he is only known as Wendal. Quick with a smile that charms and diffuses most situations, Wendal is generally well liked by the commoners in town. When he isn’t figuring out the next heist or big payday, he is often found either helping others or looking out for those in need of help. While it may seem like a contradiction for a thief to be helping others, Wendal doesn’t see himself as a criminal, but rather an instrument of fairness – something this area sorely lacks. After the Thieves Guild cut, often Wendal will keep his earnings at the ready to help others who are in need but lack the funding for one reason or another. Because of this, Wendal is often “paid” for his help – sometimes by a cool tankard of ale, other times by receiving a “friends and family” discount at a local merchant’s place of business, or credit. The only payment Wendal refuses (unless insisted upon for a meaningful reason) is coin. He has no interest in taking coin from his extended family (as he sees most of the down-trodden in the area) but earns his keep through his “other work”.   Wendal lives a fairly modest life, having just moved up from living in streets to being able to rent a room above his favorite watering hole. A tavern where the ale is never watered down (at least, not for him) and a smile and a laugh can actually be witnessed – more often than not. And while Wendal has taken quite nicely to having a roof over his head, he is all too familiar with life in the alleys – and isn’t afraid to find a place to lay low, if need be.   Wendal’s surname, “Padfoot” doesn’t come from his mother, nor his father. In fact, he doesn’t have a clue who they might be, whether they live or have passed on long ago. He took the last name simply because it was given to him. The guild members, as they often do, tagged him with a nickname – “Padfoot” and it has stuck ever since.   While Wendal feels that he and his alter ego “Padfoot” are virtually two different people, he is generally known as both by those he helps and those he interacts with on an almost daily basis. More than once have the town guard been hunting for “an annoying little shit who just pinched a coin purse in the market” only to have one of the local merchants or other lower-class citizens hide Wendal until the coast is clear.

Personal history

Wendal was raised in an orphanage since he was an infant. He was constantly at odds with the caretakers and as such got into mischief (and occasionally trouble) on a regular basis. By the time his was thirteen, the orphanage caretakers were at the breaking point with him, and ultimately it was decided that he wouldn’t be marketed for apprenticeship, but instead kicked out into the streets.   It was a harsh lesson for Wendal, the realization that actions have consequences. To this day, he visits the orphanage in stealth, usually as the children are playing in the area. He will often offer advice to the kids currently in the orphanage – especially the troublesome ones. And his advice? Respect your elders and behave. They have your best interests at heart, whether you know it or not. It’s still a slight pang in his heart every time he goes past a forge and hears the clanging of the hammer on the anvil. He occasionally dreams of what it would have been like, to have apprenticed under one of the great forgemasters.   Although small in stature, Wendal’s bravery and loyalty are well-known. Not even two months out on the street, a gang of kids had heard rumor that Wendal had an “in” with one of the local store merchants (literally – the merchant gave him a key and let him sleep in the cellar). Deciding they wanted a nice fat payday, they grabbed Wendal off the streets and into an abandoned warehouse.   Wendal was tortured and beaten for two days, until a merchant, who had just recently rented the warehouse, came to move his overstock wares in. The merchant helped nurse Wendal back to health and learned of what transpired. Word of what he did spread quickly through the streets – quickly and far. Far enough that the following month, Wendal was kidnapped once more, only this time it was for an offering of apprenticeship with the Thieves Guild.
