Session 17: Atticus Fitzgerald and Rodan Spice - The Meat Men
General Summary
The session begins on Caldra 4, 2597. In the Greton Bar and Inn in Zatan the members of the party slowly begin emerging from their rooms. Rodan Spice emerges first and immediately begins drinking his never ending wine bottle and is shortly after joined by Tork. Alena Birch goes past them to practice archery out in the thunderstorm and Atticus emerges from his room along with Kale. While conversing about what to do next and the implications of genocide, they notice a very pale couple walk into the bar. Atticus hears them talking about meat with Cilas and Cilas confirms this with Atticus after they leave. He identifies the couple as Dr. Jenkins and Mrs. Jenkins. Atticus and Kale then have a conversations about firbolgs. Around this time Alena Birch returns and informs the party a group of people carrying caracesses is approaching. As the party is about to go out and investigate, the ranging party returns, soaked from the thunderstorm.
After trading some of their kills with Cilas, Tork gets One-Eyed Sawyer to come over to their table and talk to them. After stumbling over some questions, they learn that the purple minotaur that stayed at this bar was very interested in where they had heard a separate group of purple minotaurs sporting cloaks with Ravens were heading next. During a fight the rangers overheard the minotaurs were heading to attack a caravan in the desert. They passed along this information to the one who was going to stay at the inn, and after giving them 5gp he left in a hurry. Around this time Weston returned from depositing their kills in the cellar of the Greton Bar and Inn and tells the party about stories he heard as a child. Namely he recounts how growing up in the shadow of the World Spine he heard dark stories about a group that match the description of the minotaurs that attacked their group. Legend tells that there were unkillable beasts with anger and strength to rival any person that would capture children after dark to kill or take as slaves bringing them back to the The Violent Tips. They were damned, cursed, or something. Weston always thought it was just an old wives tale to keep kids inside at night until a few weeks ago. When pressed he said that to reach they The Violent Tips the party would need to go through the Pass of Akzott. It was about this time that One-Eyed Sawyer remembered the name of the minotaur they had been conversing with, Mousen. This turned the party's expectations on their head and they mulled over what to do next.
While Tork was working himself into a stuppor, Kale cast a spell with Tork's permission that put him fully under, appearing as if dead for an hour. Alena Birch took advantge of the reprieve to go read in a nook in the Greton Bar and Inn while Atticus and Rodan Spice decided to ask Cilas if they could deliver Dr. Jenkins and Mrs. Jenkins's meat to them. Cilas thanked them and the two went out into the thunderous weather. When arriving at the Jenkin's home, Dr. Jenkins was not keen on letting them in but they managed to persuade him. They noted a distinct lack of mirrors or reflective surfaces in the home while Dr. Jenkins at their prodding retrieved a refreshing beverage for them. Rodan Spice confirmed he was able to see Dr. Jenkins in a mirror and they left disappointed and with a bad taste in their mouths from the water.
The party then decided to head out and began making their way North out of town (with Tork still appearing as if dead and carried by Kale to sit in the wagon). As they went North, they passed out of the town and tilled croplands into untamed grasslands and praires. Near the evening these gave way to a swampy marshland full of stagnant water, scrub brush, and dark greens, browns, and yellows. A little before twilight the party came upon a dilapidated stone building. Alena Birch checked for magic while Tork and Atticus both investigated. They did notice a campfire that had been lit as recently as 36 hours ago, but nothing else turned up in their search. After a brief disagreement about whether to make camp in the building that night or to continue on, Atticus prevailed and they journyed another 30 minutes before making camp (with no new building to stay in, Atticus admitted he was wrong that another building could have been ahead of them).
After Alena Birch and Kale took turns keeping watch, the party headed out for the next day (Caldra 5,2597). After making their way through the marshes more, they found their way to a collection of large quartz-like obelisks sticking out of the marsh at various directions, 20-30ft. in the air. As they got closer they noticed there appeared to be stacks of bones with skulls on top every 150 feet or so around the edge of the obelisk field. Rodan Spice threw copper pieces at the skull until he managed to nail it and knock it down face-first into the marsh (only nailing Tork in the back of the head once in the process). Tork attempted to talk to the skull but it did not respond. At this point Kale and Atticus noticed there were three figures scattered among the obelisks, unmoving. Atticus, Rodan Spice, and Kale (as a spider frog) made their way in to investigate. Rodan Spice came upon a dead half-orc who was still standing but had skin sloughing off as well as flies on his eyes that were rolled back in his head while his jaw was slack and arms were down at his side. Atticus found a pale elven woman with wispy black hair whose eyes were rolled back in her head. Kale discovered a purple minotaur who he identified as Mousen. Around this time Rodan Spice and Atticus sucuumbed to some sort of paralysis while spider-frog Kale managed to shake it off. After some conversing, Tork and Alena Birch came in to the field of obelisks. Alena Birch shook off the effect while Tork fell into a trance as well after trying to shake Mousen awake.
While in their trances, Atticus experienced the peculiar time of his father complimenting him and being happy at his hard work. Rodan Spice experienced his old master Rom Laren "The Raven" telling him he was the true master now and they should visit Rodan Spice's sister. Tork experienced himself with his family and the Brutor Tribe, having fun wrestling. Alena Birch removed the effect from them with her magic from Artemis and they exited the field of obelisks. Kale decided to carry Mousen out to see if it would remove the effect from her as well. Once out of the field, Mousen began to move again and Kale set her down. Once he did however, she got up and her pupils were jet-black. She attacked Tork while saying under her breath in a chant-like manner: "Rage, Reckless, No Restraint".
A battle ensued where Mousen mostly attacked Tork while the others used their weapons to fight back. Rodan Spice repeatedly told her to go back to hell as he fired arrows, Kale used magic to damage and impede her, Tork simply attacked with his weapon and rage, Alena Birch attacked with her bow, and their new friend Atticus pulled out a strange glowing contraption shaped somewhat like an "L" in one hand and with a squeeze of his finger shot lightning at Mousen. Mousen in a fit of rage turned to flee, but took passing swings at Alena Birch on her way, nearly cleaving the ranger-cleric into two. Tork managed to catch her and an angry Alena Birch finished her with one of her beads of fireball.
With Mousen dead (again), they party discussed what this meant. Was this a clone? Was it the same Mousen? Why did she keep showing up? They noticed a raven circling overhead which Alena Birch marked and tried to attack, but even a clean-shot seemed to pass through it. The party decided to leave the body of Mousen face-down in the marsh, singed, bloody, and cut-up before continuing on their way. At dusk they made camp and called it an evening. The next session will begin on Caldra 6, 2597 in the Marshlands of Err.Sent Back to Hell
