Great Civil War
The Great Civil War lasted from 4201-4203 and resulted in the Vincaran Federation breaking away from the Lanarian Empire.
The rebels were led by political mastermind Ontaz and charismatic military leader Xarax.
The Vincaran rebels declared Beticorra and Bexalit to be an independent nation. However, they had a third archipelago up their sleeve: Iremeri. This more remote colony was unknown to the Empire, and the Vincarans used it as a secret base to build up their forces before declaring war.
When Emperor Xeebon refused to grant the rebels independence, war began in earnest. Hoping the sickly crown prince would be easier to bully and manipulate, the Vincaran rebels assassinated Xeebon. They were disappointed when Xeres turned out to be a clever, charismatic leader.
At certain points during the war, the rebels also tried to turn their ancient capital of Ozazo into a city-state under the Vincaran Federation's banner, but they were not successful due to their reluctance to attack the city and risk harming its historic and sacred sites.
The Battle of Atalav Hill was the Vincaran rebels' largest victory. Commander Xarax distinguished himself by leading the charge up Atalav Hill and later using his sharpshooting skills to take out leaders behind enemy lines.
The Battle of Miantar was fought on both sea and land, and was the Empire's largest (if pyrrhic) victory. Commander Delzon, who led the imperial forces in this climactic battle, was hailed as a hero. Afterward, neither side had significant forces left to fight with, and the rebels had lost their military mastermind, Xarax. At last, it was time to come to the negotiating table.
Emperor Xeres and rebel leader Ontaz signed the Treaty of Jantrala in 4203, ending hostilities and ceding Beticorra, Bexalit, and Iremeri to the newly-formed Vincaran Federation. Ontaz was soon elected as the Federation's first president.
The anniversary of the treaty's signing is noted as Armistice Day in the Lanarian Empire, and is marked by a fundraising ball at the Imperial Palace. The proceeds go to rebuilding what was lost in the war, as well as benefitting local artists. The date is known as Independence Day in the Vincaran Federation, and even the Vincarans living with the Empire observe a somewhat lowkey day of celebration.
