State Governor
Each of the twenty states in the Lanarian Empire is led by a governor.
Technically equal, but...
The governors of the formerly-independent nations (Tralenia, Narentia, etc.) technically have no more power than the governors of other regions that were never independent (Erdiza , Waznat, etc.) but tend to have bigger egos and more political clout. When they joined the Empire, Melsar the Conqueror allowed them to choose their own leader (and most selected their current king/queen or other head of state), provided they swore fealty to Melsar and accepted his authority. They could continue to oversee local affairs, always knowing that they’d have to bend to the emperor’s will if he demanded it. Many of the current leaders of these states are descended from the pre-imperial kings and queens.Qualifications
Anyone may be elected governor, regardless of their age, gender, or other demographics. The only requirement is that the candidate is currently a resident of the state, and has lived there for at least five years.
Duties
Governors are required to submit a monthly report to the emperor/empress, detailing the conditions and events in their state, their requests and concerns, etc. If a development is significant enough, the monarch will already know about it, but it's helpful to have everything in one report, from the point of view of the leader who is directly handling it.

Elections are held every five years. The winner of these elections becomes governor, regardless of how many times they have held the office in the past.
