Great Divide

The Great Divide separates the desert of Sivatag from Khalon. Artificially created at the end of the Orcish Migration, the divide has prevented any large-scale orcish incursion since it was formed in 1288.

History

Origins

During the Orcish Migration, wave after wave of orcs entered Morenthyr on its western border. This rattled the empire, pushing it to the brink of collapse by 1283. With Thal'Narius under siege, the mages at the Senrilan Academy worked furiously at geomancy, untapping the power held within the planet’s tectonic plates.   In 1288, the geomancers traveled to the ruins of Hydell, located along the isthmus between Sivatag and Khalon. From here, the geomancers spent a month preparing a ritual to create a chasm across the isthmus. The elven geomancers were successful, however the resulting shockwaves devastated southwestern Khalon, causing massive earthquakes. Most of the geomancers were killed during the process, sacrificing their lives for Morenthyr.   This large ravine separating Sivatag and Khalon soon filled with water, and became known as the Great Divide. After remaining orcish warbands were destroyed, elves reoccupied the eastern border of the divide, founding new towns. The largest of which was Thal’Vigilus, built over the ruins of Hydell. The Elaxian Legion has since stood watch along the divide, protecting Morenthyr from another attempted orcish incursion. Based out of Thal’Vigilus, the Legion has small bases and watchtowers along the divide. Each is equipped with a large pyre which is only to be lit if orcs cross the divide.
