Brog

Herds as far as the eye can see

"There were so many cows, I could have walked for three days across their backs and never touched the ground." -- Aryvanus Heslor, Druid of the Hysner Circle
Brog is a land of wide open vistas, immense herds of livestock and a people that just wish no more than to live their lives in peace and security, and see their children grow in prosperity. The land is troubled by raids from the Horse Clans of the north, that looks to return to their ancestral pastures that the Brogians have taken from them.

Structure

The Baron rules with a small council of advisors that are typical for the political divisions of the the Empire, with the addition of one position that is unusual - the Herd Master.  The Herd Master is responsible for making sure that the vast herds of the barony, and the ranchers that run them have their concerns heard, and problems addressed.

Culture

Most of the people of Brog live in the towns that started out as ranching communities. This population centers serve as supply stations for the ranchers that live a nomadic lifestyle out in the grasslands, moving their cattle from prairie to water, and back to prairie through most of the year, before the great drive to the south of all the livestock ready to be sold. This divides the people of Brog into two distinct groups, the townsfolk, and the ranchers. Generally the two get along very well, but on occasion ranchers sometimes feel that they are not getting treated well and some disagreements boil over.

Public Agenda

The goal of the barony is to keep growing the herds and selling them each fall on the great drive south.

Assets

Brog is famous for it's vast herds of cattle that wander the great grasslands.

History

Brog started in the eastern hills of it's current territory 170 years ago. About 100 years ago, the Brogians started moving to the west into the lands that had been occupied by the Horse Clans. At first the Horse Clans accepted the Brogians moving out of the hills onto their grazing lands, but after a few years and increased movement into their territory, the Horse Clans told the Brogians that they could come no further.  That lasted just a few months before additional Brogians moved into the  grasslands. The Horse Clans reacted by attacking the ranchers, stealing their herds, and taking the people that they didn't kill as slaves.   This lead to a full on war declaration from the Brogians, who with help from the Drogs to he west, worked to drive the Horse Clans out of the eastern grasslands, and forced them northward. Since that time, the Horse Clans have continually raided both Drogol and Brog, stealing cattle, taking the people into slavery, and destroying farms and villages. The Brogs have built fortifications and walls as quickly as possible, but the constant raids have made it difficult.  There are rumors circulating that the Horse Clans are gathering forces for more than just a few border raids.

Demography and Population

Dribor - Dribor is a small town on the border of Ysdale, not too far from the lands of the Horse Clans. It has a wooden wall protecting it from the frequent raids from those nomads.   Ibradru - A small town that has a fort, and a good sized market.   Khuz - A town near the Ysdale border. Khuz does a lot of trade with this neighbor.   Krogru - One of the few border towns that has been able to complete it's stone fortifications as protection against the Horse Clan raids.   Modrodh - The location of a large temple of Light, and a contingent of Lightbringers who help patrol the border wit hthe Horse Clans.   Qash - A large town that is the nexus point for the great southern cattle drive each fall, and one of the biggest markets in the barony.   Vrugh - The capital of Brog, and the biggest city in the land. It has a great market, a large Temple, and just outside of the city is a Circle of druids that roam the lands helping the ranchers and farmers.   Zrazgar - A small town in the eastern hills. that is know for it's particular shade of orange used in its woolen items.

Military

Brog requires all of its citizens to train to defend their homes against the constant threat from the northern Horse Clans. So everyone over the age of ten has had some training and is available to join a militia and fight.  The barony also has a standing army of several thousand that is distributed throughout the land, particularly along the northern border.  This is supplemented by the Brogian Rangers, a private militia of about two thousand  chartered by the Baron to defend the border, and retaliate across the border as they see fit.

Agriculture & Industry

The vast majority of Brog is in someway connected to ranching and farming. The towns act as supply depots for the ranchers as they move their cattle from pasture land to pasture land. Many of the towns engage in leather work, and wool trades, with may small wool mills existing along the rivers and streams of the land.

Trade & Transport

The biggest trading activity occurs in the fall as the massive herds of cattle are driven south, first to Qash, and then further on to the southern markets.  When the ranchers and merchants return north, they bring with them many of the goods that can only be purchased in the lands to the south.
