Renyan

The Renyan ethnicity reside mainly in Al Renya with some remnants of the culture being found in The Drowned Land. Generally there is little drive to travel but a few are found in Paradigm and some will agree with the teachings of Montihume and settle there.

Stereotypes

The Renyans are often seen as stiff by the rest of the world and slow to keep up with new ideas. Their ideas of Monarchy are seen as offensive to some, as well as their treatment of The Lost. They are known as hard workers though and are seen as dependable.

Naming

While other languages have been adopted, names are still given in the traditional Renyan tongue. For people, names begin with the word "Ken" then a personal name and either the mothers family name or fathers family name based on the gender of the child, they get the matching gender of the parent, with the option to change it later in life. Some examples of names are: Banya, Sola, Yala, Deba, Aqa, Keya, Qay, Yaba, Heenya, Sonya, Freqa, Leela, Payan, Soran, Catan and Duba. All names for the Alkken are gender neutral.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

They have a language called Native Renyan. These days Native Renyan is mainly reserved for naming and official business. It is a shared language between Reyans and The Lost, with the former having their own dialects.

Culture and cultural heritage

The Renyans prefer sports that are practical and have an aspect of competition to them. Commonly they will compete in sprints, marathons, high jump, archery, fencing and boxing. Gambling, both on these events and independently, is common. Outside of sports, wood carving is a common hobby.
Stories often come in the form of comedies based on mocking the noble families or tales with morals.

Shared customary codes and values

Morality is decided by long standing tradition, often passed along in stories. Law is decided by the Rakkal broadly and the nobles locally. Honour is important as well as a reputation for being hard working, however honour is only as important as it doesn't get you killed. Other nations with natural advantages or dirty tricks are seen as dishonourable and action is allowed to be taken to even the scales.

Common Etiquette rules

The young are often told to be quite and keep their ideas to themselves. At different times they will either listen to this or rebel. The elderly are seen as the holders of tradition and well respected. There is a lot of tension with other races, especially with conflicts between the Lost and the Bast. The People of Dost are pitied and the Kratians are seen as equals.

Common Dress code

Fashion in Al Renya is often dictated by a type of flower. A noble will travel the land and find what they think is the latest trend. Then they have footmen pick an entire field of the flower to use in adoring clothes. It is seen as the height of fashion to be wealthy enough to mimic the latest trend before it quickly vanishes. They primarily have brown and black dyes so their base is of plain colours and the flowers accent this. Workers will often have undyed clothes of grey that becomes sunbleached to a dirty white. Cotton is a main fabric used in clothing, with the rich using linen.

Art & Architecture

Al Renyan houses follow ancient styles. They are made of wood with triangular roofs. Porches are common as are wooden support beams. Buildings in Al Renya are made of planks primarily with mud bricks for bases. Tiles are often used for accenting buildings and houses are considered never finished.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Pork, beef, venison and fish are common meats people will have, as well as rice in the north but in the south potatoes and wheat are more common. Fruit collected from the forests are common as well. Dogs and bears are both kept as pets and used in the military.

Superstitions

They generally do not believe in destiny, only that the knowledge and traditions of the past will lead to making the right choices. When someone is unlucky they will knock on wood and blame the Bast. Becoming unlucky can happen by touching something metal that you do not own or by ignoring an elder.

Coming of Age Rites

There are few coming of age traditions, just everyone in the family gathering together when someone becomes 16 to celebrate.

Funerary and Memorial customs

The colour black is associated with mourning. Pyres are a common way of having a funeral, as well as burying people depending on personal choice. Funerals will be held where the family gathers together and mourns.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

The commoners trend towards olive skin tones while the nobles show their political ideals - if they agree with expansionist policies they will try to have their skin look lighter. They will make their skin look darker if they are more economicall and environmentally focused.

Relationship Ideals

For non-nobility, marriage is a free and personal choice. As people increase in rank, their are more obligations they have to represent either Ammaken or Alkken, or represent a union of both. For these couples love is rarely an option. Sexuality and third genders aren't often talked about and in some parts are actively repressed.
