The Evening Isles

The Evening Isles are the smallest lordship in the Silver Sea region. The lordship is located on the chain of islands separating the Silver Sea from the Western Sea, which is called the Evening Isles as well. It is ruled by House Mearis of the Evening Isles. The capital city is called Mearia and spreads across the two middle islands.

The two sides of the city are connected by a large, arched stone bridge. It is depicted as a golden bridge on a blue background on the crest of House Mearis and therefore on that of the Evening Isles. The mearian harbour handles most of the trade in and out of the Silver Sea.

Historically, the Evening Isles were a highly contested area. Whoever controls them has control over the trade in the Silver Sea, which is a very priviledged position to be in. The Lords of the Evening Isles have been known to change their allegiances often, usually in order to insure the survival of House Mearis.

Nowadays, the Evening Isles are not an area of dispute anymore, because the main-land kingdoms of Eleonis and Aguilear came to an agreement to split the Isles evenly between them. The border between the kingdoms now runs through the harbour of Mearia, splitting the city into an eleonian and aguilean part. The lordship of the Evening Isles remained intact and is now part of both kingdoms, but at the same time belong to neither really.

This leaves House Mearis in a unique bargaining position. If the two kingdoms were to go to war against each other, it would be up to the Lord or Lady of the Evening Isles to decide which side to back, if any. It hasn't come to this situation since the contract splitting the Isles evenly was made, but if it ever does, House Mearis' allegiance might just be able to tip the scales in either kingdom's favour.
