Session 22 - Planning Defenses
General Summary
The party, gathering at Lada's the next morning, discussed what needed to be done. The hostess had been busy baking a round bun, which rolled out of the gate upon the guests' arrival (but not before it seems to have browbeaten poor Sharik, who had to be returned to the abbey). Irina could not be reached, as she was busy praying. Eventually, the party decided that one of two courses of action were in the best interest of the party, and the village as a whole; either prepare the village for its defense against these six riders, or start a procession to head into the safety of the city, and leave the town to the riders. It was decided to ask the two leaders of the village what they thought was best.
Ivan spoke with the acting Mother Superior, who believed that retreat might be the only reasonable course of action to save the villagers, but that she hoped God would save the town if they decided to protect it. Hamal and Vashti spoke with the village headman, a man by the name of Roman , and convinced him that they could repeal or defeat these riders by setting traps by the bridge. Eventually, the decision was to ask each person whether they wanted to risk dying to defend their land, or to retreat and possibly starve in the city. The town, the vast majority of it, decided upon defending its land.
At Hamal's suggestion, traps were placed at both bridges. One was set to collapse, and both were set with wooden spikes to impale the horses. Hamal decided to keep an eye on the graveyard, while Ivan positioned himself between the bridges. Light-Heart was sent to scout out the woods to the south, and Irina stayed at the temple to defend and heal anyone who retreated behind its walls. When Lada and Vashti stayed at Lada's place, they were surprised to see Prokhor visiting late at night. And soon after, the sounds of horse hoofbeats from the west...
