Ascalon Empire

The Ascalon Empire is the post-Republican incarnation of ancient Ascalon. Centered on its sole capital of Ascanopolis, Ascalon extends both East and West into Centeria and Lustrea. Founded in 1 AA primarily by Humans and Dwarves, Ascalon is famed for its infrastructure, dominance on the battlefield, grand bloodsports, and widespread use of slaves.

History

Originally founded as a Republic by settlers from the Three Kingdoms, Ascalon was founded more recently then its sister nations of Albasca, Sylvenne, and Luncia. However, it quickly grew to outshine them in nearly every aspect. One key addition to the founding of Ascalon was the help of local Dwarves, which resulted in the addition of Moradin to the Ascan pantheon.   Ascalon lost its status as a Republic in 569 AA after a military coup installed a dictator, transforming the government into a monarchy. However, to maintain legitimacy, the Ascan senate was maintained as an important institution, dictating much of the legal workings of the empire.

Culture

A cultural hegemony, Ascalon has dictated various standards adopted by many other nations, including the Ascan calendar and the modern Ascan language. Old Ascan is still spoken in some parts of the Three Kingdoms, however.   The Gods worshipped by the Ascan Pantheon, Pelor, Erathis, and Moradin, are some of the most widely worshipped Gods in Materia. Worship of Melora is illegal in Ascalon.   While Ascalon was founded with the assistance of Dwarves, it is a primarily human state. Racism against Dragonborn is particularly common due to the historical and ongoing conflict with Dragonborn tribes in the East.   Figures of importance in the Ascan government, Army, and Church tend to become widely famous, and are subjected to satire. For example, Emperors of Ascalon, or their Triumvirate Guard are often depicted in the arts.
