Asumi Fujiwara
Sword Saint Asumi Fujiwara
Asumi Fujiwara was a famed general, coup leader and sword saint. She was responsible for the 798 coup of the Shou Empire, and the ensuing Shou Warring States period.
Early Life
Asumi Fujiwara was born in Sakogawa, and raised as the second of six children. Often fighting with her older brother Jun, Asumi insisted on martial training so she could better withstand altercations with her older brother. Despite being three years his junior, she soon began regularly outsmart him in their fights, but still bore a significant age disadvantage. As Asumi grew older, it became apparent to her mentors that she had a keen mind for strategy and war, as well as being a gifted athlete and swordswoman. Striking a deal with her family, she promised to agree to an arranged marriage in exchange for allowing her to begin an unusual career in the military .Adulthood
Purposefully creating circumstances to subtlety sabotage multiple marriage candidates supplied by her family, Asumi eventually settled on a matrilineal marriage to a lower-class nobleman named Katsuro, allowing her to fully pursue her career in the military, in which she found great success. While she did later fall in love with her husband, she proved incapable of producing any children. Her husband died seven years after their union, leaving Asumi widowed and heartbroken.Military Coup
There is no need for spectacular sacrifices; it is better to have persistent, tenacious struggle.” - Asumi FujiwaraIn the military, Asumi quickly rose to rank of General, finding herself in charge of the Shou Empire's military by her early 30s. The main contributing factors to her meteoric rise were her family connections, markedly strong confidence, willpower, and decisiveness, making her a generally imposing figure for most who met her. Citing the corruption of the ruling dynasty as a casus belli, Asumi deposed the ruling Anzai Dynasty in 798 AA, killing Emperor Jirou Anzai and defeating the Sword Saint Ren. Captured soon after by Anzai-allied tributaries, she was taken to Seito to stand trial for regicide, but narrowly escaped prosecution by inheriting the Sword Saint title from Ren, making her de facto legally infallible.
Later Life
Soon regaining Seiken from its corrupted state, Asumi served dutifully as Sword Saint for almost 20 years, surprising essentially all onlookers. Asumi was a prominent friend of Haru Anzai later in life, who she had nearly killed during the 798 coup. Upon losing her title in early 40's, she disappeared from Seito, and was never publicly sighted again.
